okay so this is a bit of an inside joke guys but bear with me

How do I feel about this character?

So normally I don’t really think all that much about Koga.  He’s pretty cool in Pokemon Special, in the games he’s okay but his gym in Gen 1 is really obnoxious with the invisible walls (even if you do know the trick to navigating it’s still a pain -- not as bad as Sabrina, but still).

But in Project: Elements?  I love him. He’s smart and methodical and dedicated to both his duty and his family, which is why he agrees to help InterPol out in the aftermath of the Team Rocket incident in Kanto.  Despite his stoic exterior he has a sense of humor, too, and the way he both can and will run circles around Lance is an endless delight for me.  And for all that he is so determined to put things right, he also has a moral code that’s capable of recognizing the grey areas, rather than categorizing everything as black and white with no in-between.  He’s generally a pretty good guy who’s doing his best to live up to his personal code of ethics and honor, which gets really weird because of this situation he somehow found himself in the middle of.

Who do I ship this character with romantically?

I have no idea honestly because he does canonically have a daughter, but I’m pretty sure we never meet his wife at any point?  Given that he clearly either has or had one, I have a hard time speculating on his romantic prospects.

Who is my brOTP for this character?

Haha it’s Lance

almost entirely because of the weird pseudo-enmity thing they have going on where Koga is constantly one-upping the Champion (Lance is the one that calls him the Creepy Ninja Bastard, as you might have guessed).  When push comes to shove, though, Koga will pull out all the stops to help Lance out regardless of any trouble they might have had previously, and while they’re never going to be the best of friends, I really enjoy the relationship they end up with.

Also I really like the idea of him being a caring father and not only training Janine in the ninja arts he uses, but making time to come home and help her out and encourage her when she takes over the gym following his induction into the Pokemon League’s Elite Four.  

What’s my Unpopular Opinion™ about this character?

Okay so I’ll be honest, I don’t do a lot with the Pokemon fandom generally so I don’t know what kind of popular opinions there are, let alone unpopular ones.  In general I just don’t think that he gets enough of a chance to shine: he has fewer appearances than most of the major NPCs from that generation, and while there are really cool things hinted about him, we never get to see a lot of it put into practice.  I kind of wish that his role as a teacher or his skills compounding medicine got more attention rather than focusing on the whole ninja aspect, since those are both really cool things that say a lot about him as a person.

What’s one thing I wish would have happened with this character in canon?

Are we talking canon canon like the Pokemon franchise?  Because frankly I think that most of the games could benefit from additional fleshing out.  It’s nice that in HG/SS you can battle gym leaders in other locations or interact with them outside the gym on certain days of the week, but that doesn’t apply to the Elite Four, so the game really doesn’t give him a lot of chances to become a real character.  It would have been really cool if you could see him and Janine doing things together on the days when she’s not at the gym, or even have a chance to run into him at the Safari Zone since people there in FR/LG talk about how he patrols it for the safety of the pokemon.
