Tracking versions of your work is surprisingly easy!
You can use it for anything: code, art, writing, power point presentation... You've all seen the version numbers in games that go like this:
0.6.12
The last digit (in this example the 12) means little changes. So fixing bugs in code or fixing grammar in text.
The second means major changes like new functions in code, new items in a game, new lighting layer in digital art.
And the first means a full product. 0 means the product is not full yet, 1 means a full product and anything after that means you've rebuilt your work from the ground up.
The rules are pretty loose, you can add letters if your work is branching, for example a different colour variant for your art piece. Also don't get stuck in the 'Can this be considered a new version?'

Any change counts as a new version, depending on how big that change is you'll increase a different digit by 1. Changing the wording of a sentence in a chapter could be considered either a patch or a major addition, that's up to you.
