About the direction WoW’s been going these last few years as a game. Simply put - I think it’s stopped being an MMO a long time ago. I mean sure, it’s still massive, it’s still multiplayer, it’s still online and it’s still an RPG, but it’s lost a lot of the community and social aspects that made the game so good back in the day. I know most people will just say that it’s nostalgia talking but I think the last few weeks have really spoken volumes about how the game’s changed over the years.

Now normally I don’t really give a shit about Sodapoppin or other WoW streamers, but I think the Project 60 event that he’s been a part of is the perfect example of what I’m talking about. For people unaware, Project 60 is a move by people who are trying to get back into WoW and prepare themselves for the classic servers launch by playing the current game up until level 60 where they lock their XP gains and start doing level 60 content like Blackwing Lair, Molten Core, Onyxia’s Lair, etc. 

Sounds a little stupid honestly, but hey, they’re having fun so whatever, right? Well, it turns out that due to the player sharding (where players are moved to different servers on the fly to help smooth out the population and make the game feel more populated on smaller servers) done by Blizzard on normal servers, the people involved had to turn to playing on an RP server since sharding and Cross-Realm Zones (CRZ) aren’t in effect there, so they can all play together as a group. And here’s where the problems start. Basically, streamers like Sodapoppin, Asmongold, and the rest all have large audiences who also wanna get in on this, and as with all large, uncoordinated groups like this, there’s gonna be a fair share of assholes who jump in just to mess with people, especially on an RP server, ESPECIALLY on fucking Moon Guard, the server they chose to play on and the server notorious for its RP community. To put it bluntly, people are getting trolled left and right, Moon Guard players are pissed and reports are flying all over the place. Shit happens, especially at the Goldshire Inn where it might literally happen.

Now anyway, that was a bit of a tangent, but I think this entire Project 60 mess illustrates exactly what I think is wrong with the game right now; namely, you can’t actually play as a community anymore. Think about it - all of these people had no choice but to pick an RP server because the normal servers won’t allow them to play as a group. There’s simply too many of them to all group together to prevent the sharding, and the group is too big and too broad to properly organize or coordinate, which lead to the eventual case of people using the movement as a cover to troll RPers. People in the community are getting mad at the streamers for this sort of thing happening and are demanding that they either make their viewers stop doing this to them or leave the server, but what choice do they have? They literally cannot play together on normal servers because the normal version of the game isn’t made to be social in anymore. Think about this, you cannot be social on this MMO in large groups. The game won’t let you. 

Now I know a lot of this is due to mostly the age of the game and the fact that its declining population in recent years has led to these old servers being depopulated and therefore necessitating the existence of a feature like sharding to smooth out the experience for people, but the lack of a strong server community is feeding into this. Without a server community, people feel like the game isn’t as social anymore, so they quit, which depopulates servers, which leads to features like sharding, which leads to servers feeling less like communities, and on and on. This is also just one in a long line of features that have led to the game feeling less social and less like a community. I won’t pretend that these are the only reasons the game’s numbers have been declining, but I really do think that this is one of the bigger reasons for it. Ultimately I think sharding and CRZs were a major mistake and the game would have been better off with more server mergers to combat the lower population problem. This would also be a shock to players on the affected servers but ultimately it would be a short-term detriment as opposed to the current never-ending problem that CRZ and sharding causes.
