Empathy does not suddenly fall from Virtue to Vice when applied to fallen so-called “fallen” emotions. On the contrary, you absolutely empathize with the fallenness of the Other: mourn their enslavement to the curse of Sin and the fear of Death, and love them not just despite their sin but in reaction to their sin. Forgiveness is the fruit of having first empathized with someone’s sin. We are made divine, not by miracles, nor by intellectual ascent, nor by condemnation of the wicked, but we are made whole by love of all humanity, even our enemies.
