Независимый японский исследователь и разработчик под ником kikx выявил уязвимость в решении ProgPoW, призванном сделать неэффективным майнинг Ethereum на ASIC-оборудовании.
По словам kikx, код управляющей ProgPoW хеш-функции можно изменить таким образом, чтобы ASIC-устройства вновь получили возможность участвовать в добыче второй по капитализации криптовалюты.
kikx подчеркнул, что в ProgPoW задействован слишком короткий 64-битный сид.
«Это дает возможность ASIC-устройствам вычислять хеш без доступа к памяти», — пояснил исследователь.
По словам одного из создателей ProgPoW Кристи Ли-Минехан, находка kikx — «довольно крутой трюк» и еще предстоит подтвердить, работает ли он на практике.
Напомним, недавно целый ряд известных представителей сообщества Ethereum подписал петицию с призывом отказаться от активации кода ProgPoW. Многие разработчики и производители оборудования считают это предложение поспешным, рискованным и даже способным привести к расколу сети.
