Dressing appropriately in the workplace for women is not only a way to show her colleagues that she is an accomplished and respected part of the team, but it is a tool that women can use to exude confidence. Between the obvious notes and the subtle art of appropriate dressing, every step you take is a demonstration of your character and poise. We’ve already been through the basics; however, a refresher would be useful. Remember that less is more. Neat hair, light makeup, no perfume, clean nails, and simple jewelry are trademark signs of a woman who has it together.
The appropriate outfit can be tricky, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. Let’s take it back to middle school to highlight some useful tips. If your skirt is shorter than the tips of your fingers, then it’s probably too short. If you are wearing a shirt that has a sleeve slimmer than the width of three fingers, then it is most likely inappropriate for the work place. See through or low-cut shirts can often give people the wrong impression, whether you mean to or not. These ‘don’ts’ may seem conservative but that is the point.
Dressing demurely in the office puts the focus on you and not your outfit. Some things to do when putting together your wardrobe are to consider colour, fit and your shoes. Choose neutral tones such as black, tan, navvy and grey for your suits and pair them with a simple, light coloured (i.e. white or pastel) blouse. Wear hosiery and closed-toe pumps or low-heeled shoes that are comfortable and easy to walk in. A good tip is to keep your heel less than 2.5 inches in height. Your suit should be presses and form fitting, i.e. not too tight or baggy. Tailor the length of your skirts and pants to an appropriate length – around your knee and to the top of your shoes, respectively. With these tips and tricks, you can be sure that you are putting your best foot forward in the office.
