Proctosigmoidoscope
A proctosigmoidoscope is a medical instrument used to examine the rectum and lower part of the colon, known as the sigmoid colon. It consists of a long, thin, flexible or rigid tube with a light source and a camera on one end, and a handle on the other end for the doctor to hold and manipulate the instrument. The instrument is inserted through the anus and advanced into the rectum and sigmoid colon, allowing the doctor to visually inspect the lining of these structures for signs of disease, such as inflammation, polyps, tumors, or bleeding. A proctosigmoidoscope is typically used in diagnostic procedures such as sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy to help diagnose or rule out conditions such as colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or diverticulitis.
