In many ways, the ability to know and speak of one's heritage is a privilege and a luxury. To have the opportunity to hear and know ones family at an age where it can be retained. To have access to one's cultural ties. For one's family to still have or feel connected through the ever present threat of white hegemony. Cultural erasure is a force that had severed my family from our roots before I ever had a chance to know its name. Even with the knowledge that I can and do try to reconnect in ways that I'm able, its never lost on me that I'm always starting from a place others refuse to recognize from their own headstart.
