S02E36 - “As We Know It”
SNN LOGO ANIMATION
INT- DEAN’S APARTMENT, DAY
Fade in on the SNN set with the gray curtain. But it’s not Laura sitting in front of it -- it’s PERRY. She looks like she did last time she addressed Laura’s viewers, at the end of Season 1, fidgety but trying to keep it together.
PERRY
Hello, Silas students.
[beat]
Or maybe students of the Vordenberg Academy.
[beat, then almost to herself]
I guess that all depends on what’s happening right now.
[back to audience]
Er, earlier today.
[she collects herself]
So, the Baron’s about to execute Carmilla. And Laura and LaFontaine and JP went to save her. I stayed behind.
[to herself again]
Someone had to clean up the blood.
[back to audience, nodding]
They’re probably fighting for their lives right about now.
[pausing, her eyes slowly turn cold]
Which really depends on this.
[she holds up the Silas Charter in one hand, then a lighter in the other]
Goodbye, Silas charter.
[she lights it on fire; it goes up fast; a very faint shadow of regret passes over her face, but she’s still cold]
You’ve got a chance now, little one.
[she watches it burn; LAFONTAINE pulls back the curtain, about to say something, but PERRY doesn’t see them, or doesn’t care]
And if you die... you won’t be the first.
LAFONTAINE
Per, come quick! Laura’s hurt!
[Perry still doesn’t pay attention]
Per?
PERRY
[turns slowly to LaFontaine, as if she’s just noticed but doesn’t care]
No, not really.
FADE TO BLACK.
INT- DEAN’S APARTMENT, SUNSET
No one’s here now, but after a moment, CARMILLA comes through the door. She’s carrying LAURA. She’s not doing too well at it, either -- they’re clearly both hurt. LAURA groans. With difficulty we wouldn’t expect from her, CARMILLA deposits LAURA on the couch. Instead of standing over her, she drops to one knee. She’s got a big gash in her side, right through the leather vest.
CARMILLA
It’s okay.
[beat]
What hurts?
LAURA
[pushing herself back to awareness from someplace painful, complaining]
Everything.
[suddenly serious]
Almost losing you.
CARMILLA
[looks away]
You shouldn’t have come after me.
LAURA
You would have for me. You did for me.
CARMILLA
[struggles to her feet so that she can walk away a few steps]
[almost sarcastic, but not terribly cruel]
My hero.
[beat]
Gingerella didn’t come along to watch out for you. I could wring her --
LAURA
[interrupting]
Danny’s dead.
CARMILLA
[still not looking at Laura; she doesn’t know how to react]
There’s a lot of that going around.
LAURA
You were right. We should have run. No one cares.
CARMILLA
Apparently you do.
[sees something out the window off-camera, looks at it]
The Zetas are out there. They look...
[she’s a little happy about this]
...angry.
LAURA
[groans again, then:]
Well, you killed the big bad.
[she looks a little proud]
CARMILLA
[quoting, smirking]
“Who’d have thought the old man would have so much blood in him?”
LAURA doesn’t like CARMILLA’s nonchalant tone.
LAURA
I thought he’d turn into a giant snake or something. But he just...
...crumpled.
CARMILLA
[turns back to her]
Laura...
LAURA
No, it’s okay.
[beat]
We’re okay.
[CARMILLA and LAURA look at each other a moment.]
CARMILLA
[shaking her head, repeating herself]
Laura...
LAURA
I’m just saying, we’re alive. That’s good, right?
CARMILLA
...yeah, that’s good.
LAURA
We’re alive. So can we talk?
CARMILLA
[starts to say something, then stops herself]
[nodding slowly]
Yeah, we can --
[And that’s when JP bursts into frame. He’s obviously looking for someone or something.]
JP
Miss Laura, Miss Carmilla, have you seen LaFontaine?
LAURA
I thought they were with you.
JP
I fear we were separated. I saw them headed back here...
[PERRY walks in during his pause. She looks very unlike the Perry we know... much too haughty. Everyone looks at her, waiting for help or an explanation, until JP speaks up.]
JP
...Miss Perry. We can’t find--
PERRY
[interrupting]
--You won’t.
[to the camera]
The sage has been claimed. The gates open.
[to Carmilla]
Hello, sweetie.
FADE TO BLACK.
ROLL CREDITS, TO “LOVE WILL HAVE ITS SACRIFICES” THEME.
AFTER CREDITS:
INT- DEAN’S APARTMENT, NIGHT
