When Zuko finally finds his Uncle Iroh - but finds him asleep - Zuko patiently waits the entire night before dealing with the consequences of his own failure the next morning - offering whatever the other wanted or needed for forgiveness.
Iroh is, consistently and repeatedly, shown to be the single most important person in Zuko's life. Surrogate father, wise uncle, doting grandfather, teacher, advisor, and so much more in one.
A couple of episodes earlier, Zuko finally understands that the Fire Nation really fucked up - and that Katara has merged her anger about her mother with her anger at him.
Zuko patiently waits the entire night before dealing with the consequences of his own failure the next morning - offering whatever the other wanted or needed for forgiveness. Sound familiar?
Zuko's regard for Katara is so high that the way he approaches forgiveness with her is identical to the way he approaches it with UNCLE IROH. Obviously Iroh and Katara have vastly different needs, but eventually arrive at the same place.
Zuko wronged a LOT of people. But there are only two people in the franchise that he laid himself fully bare emotionally for. One was Iroh, one was Katara.
I find it hard to believe that zuko and katara wouldn’t have had each other occupying their minds after the last agni kai. He took lightning for her. They both reached out for each other. She healed him. It wasn’t just about the fire nation prince and the avatar. Katara was the constant one. The world wouldn’t have the avatar without katara, he wouldn’t have survived without katara. The fire nation prince wouldn’t have survived without katara. It was change. It was water. It was katara.
Katara: Brings up her mother's death in an attempt to emphasize with other victims of violence. She uses her grief to connect with others and to provide sanctuary.
The fandom: Ugh! Why won't Katara shut the fuck up about her mama? Doesn't she know others have been through worse? Katara is such a bitch for what she said to Sokka!
Zuko: Was burned alive by his father and had his honor dangled in front of his face since the age of thirteen. He holds onto his honor so hard that it leads him to act in ways that could possibly kill him.
The fandom: Haha! Zuko's honor! So funny.
Jet: Mentally unstable from the ethnic cleansing of his village that made him the pseudo father of his team. He tried to do better but was brainwashed and killed mercilessly.
The show and fandom: Haha! Jet's dead. Fuck him tho.
Korra: Was groomed by her uncle and isolated from her support system. Her spirit was ripped from her body and was spiritually tortured.
The fandom: Why did that dumbass trust her uncle?
Aang: Aang is an adult man who dragged his politically important friends on a wild goose chase. He drove them into a storm while on a boat and nearly killed them at sea. When his wife/gf tried to get him to turn the ship around, Aang refused to address any of her points and instead used his trauma as a get out of jail card. Aang's trust in a stranger ended up killing them all but his gf/wife revived everyone. They all forgive Aang and go on a journey at the end of the movie to go collect artifacts from Aang's culture. He even gets a group of Air acolytes who dedicate their lives to Aang's culture and its survival.
The fandom: Yes, I will throw a temper tantrum if my goat experiences a fraction of what Katara and Korra went through in this fandom. Who cares about them? Only Aang gets to kill his friends. That doesn't reflect anything about him at all. If anything, they weren't supportive enough.

I feel NATLA is for those who didn't like how ATLA treated its female characters and give them more autonomy, more agency, more depth. Something the cartoon was severely lacking. I also didn't like Aang much yet in this version I do because he does apologize when he lashes out at others unlike the cartoon version. He doesn't view Katara as a prize. Katara doesn't have to be used to calm him down. I love that the male characters still get grace and empathy and are allowed to be vulnerable. I love the changed they made with Zuko arc, even Jet who was treated like an irredeemable monster wasn't treated like that at all in the show. I love Iroh with the refugees. Such a powerful scene and his scene with his son still made me cry.
Zuko's entire arc is learning about his ancestor's colonizer ways and resolving to fix it and learn from it.
Calling him a pro colonizer means you didn't watch the series all the way through or you're just plain ignorant.
Take your pick I guess.
The problem with *chronically online* ATLA fans (not the Gen. Public) is that they have empathy for every main character who is a child BUT Zuko. Like every second post on twitter with his name is then giggling about him getting abused, killed, or severely harmed by either his family, girlfriend and friends or the Gaang. I am genuinely asking what's up with this? Like they genuinely don't have this beef with Ozai that they do with him😭. All this because him being *one of* General Public's favs despite all their sincere efforts to prop up others don't work, that or they act with this vicarious hate against zutara or zk shippers by dragging Zuko.
Katara is an empathetic, kind soul who would shiver at the thought of hurting her mother's killer—but y'all are jumping through hoops, making vivid HCs about her abusing and straight up KILLING Zuko!? Do y'all genuinely not see the irony and mischaracterization in it?
And the thing that pisses me off the most is, they say all this bs in the name of "loving Zuko, but being ready to whack him". Pls stop doing this😭. At the very least be loud and proud in your hate. Like Stfu with y'alls "oh but he was written to be bullied in a loving way". You know DAMN well you aren't doing that and you sure as hell don't "love him".
I think I've made a post on this before, but the most frustrating part of that fandom is that they pretend Zuko is this universally beloved character online who barely gets hate and slander, so any thing they say on him is 'levelling the playing field' but that's just not true!?
So genuinely pls stfu about him if you don't like him
