MarĂa JosĂ© was born a happy baby, as most are. The crying and screaming is inevitable the first few seconds of your life, of course, but then thereâs that happiness. The happiness of being held close to your mother â the one who held you inside of her for so long, and feeling her heartbeat. The closeness you always craved but had no idea how to convey that you wanted it. Happiness. A feeling thatâs indescribable, but you feel it anyway.
And then, things started to hurt. For MarĂa JosĂ©, it was the first time she scraped her knee at the age of six. She was learning to ride a bike by the hands of her Uncle Juan, and things went awry. As MarĂa JosĂ© felt confident to push off without her uncleâs help, she went flying off of the bike and right into the pavement.
That wasnât the only time she hurt. The next time hurt even more, and she didnât have any scars to prove it. Her father had been away filming his telenova for months, and she was absolutely elated to have him back in her life again. At ten years old, she jumped up and down excitedly and ran towards his arms. âPapĂĄ! Te amo,â MarĂa JosĂ© exclaimed, wrapping her tiny arms around his leg. Instead of looking at her, he mumbled that he was sleepy and walked away. All she could do was cry.

Not soon after, MarĂa JosĂ© found out what it was like to be frightened. As she was falling asleep one night, eleven years old, she felt someone slip into bed with her. She opened her mouth to ask if it was her mother, but instead she was greeted with a large and heavy hand over her mouth. She knew she wanted to scream, but she stayed quiet instead for fear of what would happen. Moments later, there was the same kind of hand in her SpongeBob pajama pants. Quickly, in the same moment, MarĂa JosĂ© felt frightened and hurt.
And just like that, happiness was replaced with fear and pain. Indefinitely. That large and scary hand that haunted her nightmares belonged to her Uncle Juan. Almost every night he would visit her, touching her in places that her mother told her should never be touched. So badly MarĂa JosĂ© wanted to tell her mother, but her uncle had whispered to her (in Spanish): âif you tell anyone, I will kill you and your mother.â
It seemed as if MarĂa JosĂ©âs life was plagued by this fear and pain. No matter where she went, she felt his hands crawling over her body and his lips against her ear. No matter how many showers she took, she always felt dirty. She became a shell of who she used to be, and the happy girl that loved her family more than anything in the world was gone.
When she was fifteen years old, MarĂa JosĂ© felt anger. She decided to be a teenager and go out with her friends for once, wanting to forget the life that she had at home. Of course, when she arrived home â Juan was waiting for her. And not only that, but the smirk that he wore when he realized that she was drunk was enough to scar her for ages. That night, he did more than just use his hands. And instead of his hand on her mouth, it was around her throat and wrists so she wouldnât move. And instead of pain and fear, MarĂa JosĂ© felt angry.
Anger.
This consumed her whole life. And when he had touched her like that, when he had robbed her of her virginity⊠she decided she had enough. MarĂa JosĂ© immediately told her mother about what had been happening for the past four years. Juliana broke down into tears, wrapping her daughter into a tight hug. âIâm sorry, mija,â she had told her â over and over again. Juliana felt nothing other than anger.

When Juliana told David what had been happening, he backed up his brother and swore up and down that MarĂa JosĂ© had just been making things up. âYou know, kids and their imaginations these days.â Almost immediately, Juliana packed her bags and took MarĂa JosĂ© with her â moving from Houston to Los Angeles. Their lives rapidly changed, and with the divorce came almost all of Davidâs money. The two of them lived happily, and MarĂa JosĂ© tried to start over.
But she couldnât.
While she wasnât afraid anymore, she just felt.. angry. Everyone around her seemed to irritate her one way or another, and soon enough she was known as the âmean girlâ. MarĂa JosĂ©, now going by MJ as dubbed by her high school friends, didnât seem to care. They didnât know what she had gone through. She had reason to be mad. She didnât like the way they looked at her, or the way that they talked.. and she would let them know it.
MJâs personality didnât change much throughout high school. She held onto the anger with all her might, and it just became who she was. She decided to take back her body and started sleeping with just about anyone who was up to her standards. MJ didnât want to feel those hands on her any longer, so she had other people touched her. It never worked â so she asked for more. And more, and more. And it seemed as if she would never get enough.
Soon after high school was over, she auditioned for a television show that seemed like it was going to do incredibly well. And MJ? She only wanted the best. Out of everyone else in the casting call, MJ got the role. She knew it was because of her father, but she decided to ignore that fact. She was cast alongside Landon McCarthy, and the two of them held the show for three seasons until it got canceled on a whim. When MJ learned of this, she went off on the cast and crew â telling them that she deserved better than them and she hoped that they all died.
Needless to say, it was hard for MJ to get another job after her âmeltdownâ, as many tabloids had called it. She decided it would be best to go to school, much to her dismay.. but much to her motherâs happiness. Pacific State University became her home, even if she wasnât too happy about it.
BABY, THERE'S NO OTHER SUPERSTAR
MJ always looks classy. She wears mostly black, though. Skirts, dresses, tights and heels are something that sheâs always seen in. She has dark black hair that goes past her shoulders, and she always keeps it straight.
YOU KNOW THAT I'LL BE YOUR PAPARAZZI
David MartĂnez is an incredibly famous telenovela star (of the same show for 10 years) who later turned to Hollywood to star in many movies alongside other big names. He was known as the Mexican movie star with the thick accent, and he played to that â often starring in films where he played a stereotypical roles up until recently. Now David stars in less stereotypical roles and is loved and praised for breaking out of his typical shell.
