Sarah’s mom, Lauren, was, at the time, the love of Joel’s life. They were completely enthralled with each other. They were young and dumb. She was everything to him and the Texan charmer would have done anything for her. When they got pregnant at 17 they weren’t ready to be parents in the least. Joel talked her into keeping the baby after an intense conversation. The talk was along the lines of they could do this and Joel would work however many jobs they needed to.
All so he could keep his daughter. In the end though Lauren still wasn’t ready to be a mother. Then came the troubles of parenting after Sarah was born. Joel could sense a change in his new wife, but he couldn’t anticipate the weeks to come. By the end of the second week Lauren had become completely withdrawn from him and the baby which ultimately led to the hardest decision Joel had ever made.
The fact that she didn’t want to be a mother nearly broke him, but he couldn’t abandon the little bundle of joy. It wasn’t in him after seeing the tiny strands of blonde hair and the big eyes that stared back up at him. His daughter had become his entire world. Giving her up was unthinkable so when Joel expressed his need for the tiny one she ended up skipping town the next day. Without a word she just up and left. Joel never saw her again after that.
