// hc; groot can feel physical pain, but only in a limited sense. there’s a certain misconception that because plants are able to feel touch and damage, that they are able to feel pain; however, pain is for the most part a product of human cognition and the perception of damage signals by the brain. 

groot is a sentient plant; he most definitely possesses cognitive and functional skills associated with a higher neurological system ( that which is absent in plants ). so he has the potential to feel pain, but his brain doesn’t perceive pain –––– this is something he learns from being around other beings of the galaxy, and rocket, who lives with pain. he learns that pain is something that happens when you injure yourself, or when someone injures you, and that it’s a fear response that protects you from danger; and so he’ll come to feel it, to an extent. mostly he’ll just whine about it, much to rocket’s annoyance.

at the very least, rice was reliable, definitely more reliable than most high school boys, especially those who weren’t even aware that they were heartbreakers.

“   I AM CURIOUS to know how you became so proficient in using   &   creating all these weapons.   “ perhaps what made this feat even more interesting was how his small stature was, but the widow would make no mention of it. obviously if he was able to use   &   create such weapons, he was intelligent   &   would not appreciate a comment on his small size. that,   &   the widow did not want to see that gun in action. aka, used on her.

// hc; ‘ we are groot ’ is a consequence of an extraordinary amount of love and emotion that results in the significant change to his speech production and speech perception; given the fact that the ‘ i am groot ’ speech pattern is a result of different vocal apparatus and that that forms his normal pattern covering everyday speech ( compliments, insults, comedy, sarcasm, anger, etc ).

HAPEE DAD DAY are the words lovingly scrawled across the top of the scrap of paper; each word in a different handwriting ( kraglin’s, peter’s, drax’s ) and altogether different from the likeness of each of his friends scratched out below it in crayons that must have been the size of him. he’d worked all day on it. there’s a proud giggle, leaves that quiver with joy, and a hop backward to admire the work with bright eyes. there’s no way he’d miss it, a piece of art hanging just above his bed !   

the grin is one that slowly fades into the silence of the room, but he doesn’t want to leave just yet. he doesn’t really know what possesses him to press his vines into the cold metal of the ship; sprigs of vines, wrapped up in leaves are the first to spring forth beneath his feet to create a thick bed of leaves and vines and blossoming flowers !  

      but it feels right. it feels familiar ––––

it’s late, by the time rocket’s wandering in; groot’s curled himself into the centre of the greenery, spent. he has nothing to give, out here in space; nothing rocket can use that he doesn’t already have. and so, he’ll give love, for father’s day ––– in the form of a scribbled drawing and a comforting place for his friend to rest. it’s as much as he knows how, until the day he’s big and strong enough to give more.

but then, there’s familiarity in a caring warmth that curls up around him, a warmth reminiscent of the warmest sunlight ( groot y’ idiot –––– what did you do t’ yourself? ); and even in his state of minimal consciousness, groot knows that rocket loves him just as much.

there’ll be a vine that curls around the smallest tuft of fur, a pull that lifts a gaze to meet his best friend’s, his makeshift dad’s ––––    ❛   i am groot.   ❜
