"If you enjoy bad jokes, I happen to know a plethora of them," the demon smirked.
Leonâs attention was captured by the sudden presence and voice, slightly startled as the other had come out of nowhere. His head tilted curiously as he studied him, the hint of a smile on his usual pout.
âOh? Do tell me oneâŚâ
He was intrigued, at least, not only by bad jokes but by the aura of the otherâinhuman, powerful.

It was another late night of Hot Pockets, the breakfast kind, for his middle of the night craving. Five reports overdue and one in progress, Miller had settled himself in for the long haul. Seated behind his desk with just a lamp on for light he tried to will himself to find the zen needed to really pull off typing up a recap on a recent case that had never stirred much enthusiasm in him and had -- for that very reason -- not left him motivated to accomplish his follow up paperwork.
The witch reached over absently as he adjusted the position of his laptop in order to itch at his shoulder. Beneath the sleeve of his T-shirt, the Sigil that had left a stamp upon him and his soul had long since stopped fading. Now it just itched like a sonofabitch. He tried to ignore it, along with whatever longing came attached to the connection of his soul to the demon that had left it printed on his flesh. Because he had way better things to do than pine like an idiot over some asshole that came or went as he pleased.
Miller pinpointed all of the concentration that he had upon his task. Fingers moving with agile grace of the keys of his laptop, forcing the words to manifest. He worked for some time, absently pulling over a Hot Pocket to wedge in his mouth, mostly gumming at it rather than giving it a good chew. And little by little he managed to write enough bullshit out that it would be passable without being too obviously half-assed.
He paused in reaching for his second helping when he heard faint movement in the office behind him. Turning his head, there was a flash of his glasses over his shoulder as he tried to see behind him. Snorting quietly. âYou donât even fucking spook me anymore when you just pop in like this. Maybe you should actually try knocking on the door?â
âWell, this one is a hard one to tell, but I donât mind telling it.â He faltered a moment but quickly relaxed, glancing to the ground to try and picture things better. âMy scariest experience happened when I had first become a vampire. I only wanted the gift to find my sister, Fiona, and find her, I did. It took a little while, but I followed her presenceâI canât even explain it. Between her scent and I suppose our bond, I was surprised that it had lead me home and at first, I thought I had made a mistake, butââ Another pause, he stopped breathing. âShe was there.â
âUhâwell, I thought I was too late; the blood was overwhelmingâit was everywhere. I could hardly focus on anything but that scent and you must know, to a newborn vampire, resistance to blood is difficult if not near impossible. But I went to her and I was somehow calm by the time I reached her side. She held this poor, little thingâbaby, in her arms that was obviously very dead and so tiny and when I went to take it from her, she shot up and just screamed at me. I thought she was dead but her heart, it started right back up but it wasnât strong. It was giving her the last of her depleted life source and she was just bleeding it awayâŚâ
He felt sick, unable to take his eyes off the ground. âI explained to her about the blood gift, what would happen, and then the entire turning process was just a nightmare. I thought Iâd made a mistake. She didnât wake for three nights and by that time, I thought to bury her⌠This is something that still haunts me. Seeing her pale and blue and covered in bloodâmy nephewâŚâ He stopped, putting up a hand, shaking his head.
đ - A memory about their childhood home/where they used to live         Â
Water dripped from the large yellow sponge into the tub as she worked in silence. It was the only sound in the bathroom aside from Millerâs shallow, painful, tense breaths.
Arlene had emptied the tub once already, soiled as it was with blood and urine in the first washing. Getting Miller cleaner, with the steady comfort of her running the sponge over his back, seemed to be pulling the boy out of his shell-shocked state. He had not spoken a word to her since sheâd gotten him pulled out from under the sink and into the tub, only leaving his side to throw his soiled Ninja Turtles underwear away. At the age of seven, most kids had control of their bladders. Most kids also didnât end up on their bathroom floor, covered in bloody scratches that had caused them to piss themselves with fear.
Sheâd come home that morning after working her double to discover their apartment ransacked. An initial fear of robbery quickly dissolved when she realized that this was just another Event. One of those Events that happened with a child like Miller, who seemed to attract this trouble far too often. Being attacked by fuckers she couldnât see, that had no problem torturing her son. Arleneâs blood boiled with frustration and she bit hard on her tongue.
âItâs okay, baby. The scratches arenât deep. You wonât even have to go to the hospital this time. Weâll get you Band-Aids. Those ones you like -- with Batman on âem? And Iâll take you to work with me tonight. You can sleep in the back booth again. Maybe I can talk them into giving you some hot chocolate. Youâd like that, right?â
â..Yeah..â Miller said in a small voice, finally blinking the glass out of his eyes to look up at her. âI wanna stay with you. I donât wanna be here if The Man comes back tonight. Please?â
âNo. No, you wonât have to be here if he comes back.â It took strength for her to talk about this without a tremble in her voice. She didnât know how to handle it. How did mothers with kids who could see ghosts -- could touch them or be touched by them -- deal with this situation? Arleneâs throat threatened to close as she stubbornly fought back tears. Being strong for him was all she knew to do. âMaybe weâll even get you some pie. Itâs the end of the week so theyâll be ready to throw out the old stock. Iâm sure I can sweet talk âem into sparing you a slice.â
Placing the sponge to the side she gently lifted his right arm to inspect the cuts again. It would take a lot of Band-Aids. It would spare them having to answer questions from another doctor. After all, the last time sheâd brought Miller in theyâd ended up with Child Service workers knocking on the door a few days later asking questions. Arlene didnât have answers anyone believed.
Iâm not a shitty mom. My kid gets attacked by ghosts. I canât do jack shit to stop it. And no one will help me. And no one can help him.
She finished bathing him and helped Miller out of the tub to dry him off. Arlene applied those colorful cartoon bandages over the worst of the scratches while the boy stood dutifully still. He knew the drill. Theyâd done this enough times before. Then she helped him get a t-shirt on over his head, into a fresh pair of underwear, and when he insisted on socks but no pants she complied.
The morning was stretching brighter by the time she finally carried him off to her bedroom. Arlene didnât even bother to get her uniform off but instead simply settled onto the mattress with Millerâs small form clinging to her. She kissed his forehead and petted her fingers through his dark nest of hair that was badly in need of trimming. It settled him enough that he soon fell to sleep. She kept him cradled to her chest under the blankets while the exhaustion of long hours eventually dragged her into heavy sleep for the day.

She was gone again! That sneaky wench! Snuck away before Leon had even awoken, taking nothing but a single bag of belongings with her. He had checked, destroying her room in a fit of rage in the process. And what was worse is that he knew it was coming. Had seen the way she had been distancing herself, his sweet sister, always having to ruin things when he was comfortable... but he wouldnât waste the years searching for her this time.
Twenty years, this place had been their home. They were protected in the desert with their own kind; like minded individuals of the blood. They were monsters living among monsters as it was meant to be, living by old teachings and taking solace in not being alone in their cruel fateâbut it was never enough for Fiona. She couldnât just be comfortable, no. She wanted to be free and Leon was tired of the game though it was his game. He was tired of chasing her and now only wanted to keep her. Here. Safe. Away from the rest of the everchanging world.
The vampireâs selfishness had him retreating to books, old texts of magic written in blood, older than he or anyone of the coven for that matter. He had spent weeks straight translating it once out of curiosity, with barely any rest or nourishment as he worked, but now he was glad that he had for he was ready to use what heâd learned. Heâd bound her to him completely, more-so than the blood bond. Heâd make her stay... with the right words, the right ritual. She would never leave again.
It took no time to prepare, their coven quite fond of blood magic, their leader, Tobias, a teacher of the ways of Satan which Leon had never questioned given their nature. What else could they be other than spawn of hell? Who better to pray to than the darkness?
He drew on the concrete floor of his room the right symbols in white chalk, the pentagramâhe lit the candles and set them in order, counterclockwise around the great star. The vampire began then to undress, chanting words of a long dead tongue, getting into the right headspace to let in energy and make the magic work.
He had taken a strand of his sisterâs copper hair from her left behind brush and began to wrap it in a knot around a single unlit candle as he continued his soft spoken chanting, lighting the wick when the hair could be bound no longer. With a blade, he then cut his palm to seal his request, letting the thick liquid drip over the flame which didnât extinguish, only grew brighter.
Leon said her name, over and over, his chant of dead words rasping from his lips in between as he felt himself become consumed, cutting himself again with the sacrificial blade, his wrist this time, and filling a silver chalice with his vampiric blood as an offering to whoever might be there to grant his desires.
đ: Where is the most unusual place theyâve fallen asleep at?
He chuckles, remembering immediately. âA fresh grave, actually. I was a young vampire that got carried away with hunting, and by the time dawn was approaching, I was no where near shelter. Thankfully, their was a family cemetery within distance and to my luck, a fresh grave.
"I used my hands to dig a deep hole in the already broken earth and buried myself after⌠â he paused, smile, faltering. âI hope I never have to experience it again; Waking up in the ground was a nightmare. I had forgotten my predicament from that morning and panicked, then clawed myself to the surfaceâŚit was rather intense.â
