The secondary market refers to the place where investors, traders, etc., trade in securities, i.e., they buy and sell shares or stock in a company. When talking about the ‘share market’ or ‘stock market,’ this is perhaps what most people would have heard, and are at least vaguely familiar with this.

So what exactly is the difference between the primary and secondary markets? Let’s start with the name – primary markets are also called new issue markets (NIM) and secondary markets are also called after issue markets (AIM). The primary market is where stocks are issued for the first time whereas the secondary market is where stocks are traded once issued. The intermediaries in the primary market are investments banks whereas those in the secondary market are brokers such as Edelweiss. The sale of individual shares or securities is directly from the company to individuals in the primary market whereas stocks or shares are Sold and purchased amongst investors and traders in the secondary market.
