When Pretty Decent opened I noticed but didn’t rush in. Yesterday I gave myself the afternoon off and decided it was time.
I’d read press about the place, a friend is so impressed he wants me to go Oaxaca to drink Mezcal at the source, and I follow their FB so I know they recently won a prestigious Pinnacle Guide award which is like a Michelin but for bars. Only 37 bars worldwide were recognized and Pretty Decent was one of only 12 to receive 2 Pins. No bars received 3 Pins. Pretty Decent is also a top ten finalist in Diago’s best new cocktail bars in America. So
A botany shop in front and a cocktail bar in the back. Jeanne (owner) greeted me when I walked in. She was wearing tan denim jumpsuit suitable for a master gardener, which she is. John (owner) was slinging drinks behind the bar when I walked up. The bar area only seats 20 and was mostly full but there were a couple of seats at the end of the eight seat bar.
I had the two best Mezcals I’ve ever experienced in the first two shots. Earthy, vegetal, smoky and sweet. My last shot was a ceremonial concoction that involved a rabbit in its making. A rabbit was harmed in its making. It was tasty but unremarkable. No fur or other bloody vermin essence noticeable on the nose or palate.
