THE SECRET:
After graduating from Brillantmont, Sebastian took a year off to spend writing a book of essays inspired by the letters he and his mother had sent back and forth, but he got sidetracked. He spent most of the year partying and traveling to different cities across Europe. During this trip, he drunkenly hit a local near Ljubljana, Slovenia and severely injured her. His father paid to cover it up for him and scrub his record.
His experience shook him but did not push him away from party drugs. His freshman year of undergrad was a blur of pills, alcohol, and coke. By the end of his second semester, he was placed on academic probation and threatened to be cut off by his father, so Sebastian got his act together. Since then, Sebastian has continued having fun, all while maintaining high grades.
CHARACTER PROFILE:
Sebastian Smythe was born in Paris, France as the only child of Alexander and CĆ©cile Smythe. His mother was the daughter of a famous vigneron and worked as a model during Sebastianās younger years and as a fashion designer later on. His father ran a law firm that he made very clear he intended Sebastian to inherit.
For as long as he could remember, Sebastian was spoiled. He was spoiled by his parents during the rare evenings they were home and spoiled by his nannies on the days they werenāt. He was raised speaking both French and English by his parents and nannies and was given a private tutor to learn Latin starting at age eight. This continued at the age of thirteen when he was shipped off to a boarding school in Switzerland. Although his relationship with his father was distant at best, his mother went out of her way to maintain a real relationship with Sebastian. She sent him postcards from all the places she travelled to and wrote him at least one long letter every month that Sebastian would respond to.
The only time his father visited him at Brillantmont was at the age of thirteen when he got in trouble for sneaking pornographic slides among the ones a teacher planned to show during class. His father waited until they were alone in the principalās office before turning to him and telling him, āAs long as you donāt get caught entirely red-handed, you can talk your way out of anything. And if you gain the respect of all the right people, you can even get caught red-handed and still avoid trouble. Itās about how you sell yourself.ā Sebastian memorized and lives by those words.
As Sebastian grew up, he realized he had little interest in following his fatherās dreams of him becoming a lawyer. Instead, he found himself drawn to his English and literature classes, particularly the writing he did in them. After some experimenting, he found that he shone most with writing creative non-fiction, but, as expected, his father did not want him to go into a field where success wasnāt guaranteed. Knowing that his father was willing to support him financially as long as he also did what his father wanted, Sebastian decided fighting with him wasnāt worth it and majored in Political Science, as well as Business and Political Economy at NYU as an undergrad. Heās less than thrilled to be currently pursuing a JD, but it was the path of least resistance.
