Come Home With Me
~it's me again~ with another song from the London run of hadestown. this one is pretty short so i might do epic I after this :)
Come Home With Me is honestly pretty similar to the broadway with only four lines actually altered. it is very differently performed, however, with the lines Hermes is supposed to sing being missing or given to Orpheus.
Okay, strong start. Without the banter between Hermes and Orpheus (broadway) or the 'so in love it's actually embarrassing' lyrics (off-broadway) Orpheus feels almost... cocky? Not loving it.
Okay I do like the "And then I’ll marry you / In the springtime" line. It makes the song he's working more than a personal passion and almost like a wedding gift (they covered this idea way more obliquely in the off-broadway song). The idea that Orpheus is trying to fix the world for Eurydice when it's the thing that damns her? Immaculate. I'll be thinking about this forever. Wish they had kept more of it from the off-broadway.
This last line is… not it. Again, it feels too cocky for Orpheus. They could get away with it off-broadway because of Damon Daunno's acting and nothing else. Adding Hermes into Come Home With Me for broadway was a very smart move.
Overall I'm actually not loving this Orpheus. I went down a huge rabbit-hole last night trying to figure out who played him in the London run because i refused to believe it was Reeve Carney. Unfortunately I have been forced to admit it's definitely him, but I'm still holding onto the suspicion that it's a swing in this recording.
