Time is something we take for granted: if we consider it for a moment, we normally divide it simply into the past, the present, and the future. "Presentist" philosophers, however, argue that there is neither a past nor a future; only the present exists. In other words, your last birthday does not exist and every word in this article ceases to exist after you look at it- until you look back at it again. The future does not exist, as time cannot be both behind and ahead, according to saint Augustine. Or in the words of the great scholar of Buddhism, fyodor shcherbatskoy:" everything past is unreal, everything future is unreal, everything imagined, absent, mental... Is unreal... Ultimately real is only the present moment of physical efficiency"
I almost forgot how this morning I almost walked out in front of a tram but this woman pulled me back. It's strange how we forget things, like feelings and stuff that was once so clear to us, that was once happening to us and was literally our everything; and problems that felt impassable; and we also come to forget grief and embarrassment and the overwhelming love you felt when your friend hugged you or how you got shoots up your arm when your crush touched your hand or the happiness that feels infinite when everything somehow seems to be in place. We just unconsciously pick and choose and so much of this stuff is lost which I guess makes it special but it simultaneously makes it seem too fragile to be even existent, which I suppose it isn't. Â
Media says: "Only now exists, this minute, today, this week."
A serious negative effect to my social media use (Twitter/Youtube, blogs, RSS readers) is how it narrows my time horizion. What is happening now or will happen soon comes to fill my mental space and crowds out all else.
Most of these media orient around a feature where new posts/videos appear and then these items are given urgent priority.
But, what about finding ways to hack these streams so that they serve up as urgent and important some ideas, events, posts, articles from one, five, one hundred or two thousand years ago.
