Six presentation sabres for Captain W. Moffat, late 18th and early 19th century
Wiliam Moffat was captain of the East India Company from 1799 and received various presentation sabres during his service. Most of them was awarded to him for protecting East India Company ships against french enemies but also for his humanity and kindness to prisoners during a prisoner transport.
An Unusual Ormolu-Mounted Naval Presentation Sabre Of Admiral Sir Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth, 1815
This sabre was handed over by Pellew’s second son Fleetwood Broughton Reynolds Pellew to his father’s friend, John Samuel Willes Johnson, in 1845, who while on half pay served as Flag Lieutenant until 1821 before he was finally promoted to Master and Commander.
