Picture 1&2 / Saudi Arabia 

I outlined the shapes with a pen and went over it with water colours. The result represented the desert landscape I so often saw in Saudi. I learnt to draw those shapes from my family and since Saudi is where I grew up, family lessons have greatly influenced me in my choice of design. I thought the seashell-like shape was a great symbol for the history Saudi has 

with the ocean covering its lands and thus all the ocean fossils we would find scavenging through the sand when I was young. I remember returning to Belgium on vacation and telling people about what I had found among the dunes and meeting their surprise. These fossils, shells and shark teeth always felt like a secret that nobody really knew about unless they were there themselves with their hands wrist deep in the hot sand. <

I used a scalpel craft knife to cut some undulating lines on a few pages back to back. This created an effect of depth perception and texture that reminds me of the view I experience when snowboarding off-piste in the winter mountains. I kept the paper as it was because it recalls the white monochrome nature of mountains covered in powder on a sweet snow day. The simplicity of this creation represents the perception I have when lost in the mountains and the birth of my zen state of mind surrounded by such a landscape.

Vast amounts of data are being generated across all segments of society. If taken advantage of, these data offer an unprecedented opportunity to accelerate scientific discovery, to improve healthcare and wellbeing, and to strengthen our communities. Data Science is an interdisciplinary field concerning the scientific methods, systems and workflows used to obtain insights from data

Value proposition

We are a pioneering, university-wide network of data-driven researchers at an institution with more than 25 years’ experience in Data Science education and research. Our community consists of multidisciplinary teams that address significant scientific problems and major societal issues through and related to data science including social, legal and ethical concerns in a wide range of academic disciplines.

We have identified three key research themes to focus our efforts on:

Improving clinical care and well-being

Empowering communities

Education

We have identified two primary objectives in education:

Promote and strengthen existing data science programs and courses at Maastricht University

Develop new interfaculty data science programs and courses

Community

Experts in Data Science from different application fields will meet in multi-disciplinary teams to share and combine their knowledge in order to create data driven innovations

How we deliver the project?

Through this platform, we will keep you update our progress in strengthening the Data Science community in and around Maastricht by some following steps. Firstly, in this menu/tags options, you can find any information related to Institute of Data Science. Specifically, you can get much information about the institution current activities and focus, including links to get know in person with the Distinguished Professor of Data Science, Prof. Michel Dumontier. Secondly, we will bring you deeper to see what are the needs in regards growing the community. Thus we will report some of our findings including surveys and some analysis about current and what other universities do related to Data Science. Lastly, approaching to end of the project we will report how we design, plan, and implement the diverse activities of the community.
