The Proto-Indo-European homeland or Urheimat is most likely to lie in the Pontic-Caspian Steppe, north of the Black Sea, the Caucasus mountains and the Caspian Sea, as first proposed in Marija Gimbutas Kurgan hypothesis and recently confirmed by genetic evidence (Allentoft et al. 2015 and Haak et al. 2015). Since the first skull was discovered in the Neander Valley in 1856 more than 100 years of research have changed our perception and knowledge about the Neanderthals: from primitive and exclusively carnivorous hominidae to people capable of abstract thoughts and symbolic behavior with a communicative language system and balanced diet, who purposely buried dead members of their community, authors of innovative technology and new hunting weapons, who used natural pigments to paint their bodies and shells, feathers and animal teeth to adorn themselves, The more we discover and learn about the Neanderthal the more they look similar to modern humans.
