A/N: I attempted to write something to the effect of Tangled. @hotgirlstiles. With some differences. I hope it is an okay read. Let me know if I should continue.

Stiles was bored again.
He'd already read the new books that Gerard had brought him three times already. The tower was clean and there were no more chores to occupy his time.
He had climbed down the tower in hopes that the fresh air and green fields would offer a balm to his boredom. The effort proved pointless.
He was sprawled in the grass and soaking in the sun when something passed over the boundary.
"Bored again, are we."
Stiles rolled to his side to face the voice. Opening his eyes, he watched as shadowy darkness shrunk down into an unassuming black fox.
"You were gone for so long this time! I thought you'd abandoned little old me." Stiles pouted dramatically.
"Never. Little Hibana, you're stuck with me." He responded as he made his way to the boy.
While Stiles was trying to play it off as a joke, he knew that he feared being in this place alone with no one but that wretched man as occasional company.
Stiles gave a small smile as his arms curled around the body of the fox.
"I missed you." Stiles breathed in the fur of his companion. "He paid a visit while you were gone. He said he'd be gone for longer this time. That I'd have to ration the supplies. It was the usual amount."
The vibration of a growl ran through the foxes body.
"Those meager scraps aren't enough for you already and he dares demand you spread them even thinner!" Snarled the fox.
Stiles sat up and looked the fox in the eyes. "We'll be fine. We always are. We'll survive and we'll both escape our chains. You and me, Kurai. We'll be free."
Kurai huffed, "Of course we will. It is only a matter of time."
He got to his feet and shakes his fur out. "Come, let us go inside. I brought food and was even able to aquire you a few things."
Stiles clambered to his feet in excitement. Eyes shining in anticipation, Kurai always brought him the best stuff. "Why didn't you say you had stuff. Let's go, let's go!"
Kurai chuckled and followed after the hyperactive boy. He would be considered a man by most in a few days, but would always be a boy to Kurai. What's 18 years to a millennia.

Derek was tired.
He had been on the run for days, ever since Kate had spotted him buying supplies for the pack. He had run in hopes of shaking them off but had gotten shot. Whatever was on the arrow made his body feel heavy. It was sheer adrenaline and determination that he was still able to keep moving. He was able to trick them into going the wrong direction, but he knew that if he didn't find somewhere to hunker down that they'd catch up to him.
A stray wind rustled the foliage to his left. It sounded as if there was a cave or opening behind the greenery. Decision made, Derek walked to his left and pushed his way past the bushes and curtain of vines.
Which led him into what he assumed was a cave at first, until he noticed light filtering in around a bend.
Ears perked, he crept forward while listening for any person or animal. It would just be his luck to get away from the hunters to then encounter a bear.
There were no sounds to be heard. Still cautious, he rounded the bend and walked through another curtain of vines into a clearing. All at once, as if he'd entered a bubble, sound filled his ears. Birds singing, a babbling brook leading into a small pond, and the wind rustling through leaves. It looked like a picture from a fairytale and the tower in the center just added to that thought.
There were no sounds or scents of any people around. It seemed that no one had been here in some time. The likelihood of anybody finding this place was low. He could rest here and then make his way back to his pack. His family had to be worried. Hopefully, they wouldn't do anything rash.
Derek walked up to the tower and circled it. His eyebrows furrowed.
"What idiot builds a tower with no way to get up it."
He let out a long sigh and flicked out his hand. Claws decorated the tip of his fingers. Reaching up, he dug his hand into the stone wall and started the tiring climb up. His body was getting heavier but he was determined to get into the tower. Just a little more effort and he could rest.
Grunting and growling, he fought his weakening body to make it to the tower window. Until finally, he was able to set his feet inside. Before he could take another step further, pain burst on the side of his head.
'Just my fucking luck.' He thought as he fell.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Stiles chest was heaving and his fingers were white where they gripped his new bat that Kurai brought him. It was beautifully carved and made out of Rowan wood. It was, as demonstrated, quite effective.
"Kurai! How did he get here? I thought the wards made it so no one could find this place."
"They do. Mm, I wonder?"
Kurai slicked forward to sniff at the prone figure. Upon catching the scent, his muzzle pulled back into a grin that showed off his sharp teeth.
"I believe, that this just may be our ticket out of this place."
The thing about Stiles Stilinski is that even now, at 24 and comfortably graduated from university with a few degrees under his belt, he still relies on old habits. Ones that have proven time and time again to be fatal.
But heās a Stilinski. And old habits die hard.
They die harder than any alpha, beta or omega werewolf that has ever tried to kill him or his pack. And so as a result, when even denial isnāt good enough to stop the treacherous thoughts: Stiles cooks.
Heās not sure when he picked it up. Sure, he cooked for him and his dad during high school and maybe even before then. Momās death had left more holes than theyād had patches to mend them with. But it wasnāt really until after high school when theyād all moved into a house for university (dorms were awful and theyāre all sworn to secrecy to never speak of the broken bunk bed incident) that Stiles ever really got into cooking at all.
It went from something needed for survival to something Stiles could do to provide for the wolves. And yeah, maybe it reminded him of summer afternoons in the kitchen with his mother, putting in way too many chocolate chips into the cookies. Heād always insisted on making his āsecret recipeā which was chocolate chip cookies with regular, white and butterscotch chips in them.
His mother would always chuckle and say heād ruin his dinner. But sheād always let him do it anyways.
Somewhere between making food at 2am for packmates who have been too worried about studying to eat, and breakups that required some secret recipe cookies⦠it became something much more. Cooking became therapy. Stiles could just push and push the dough until it was a hapless lump and then pound it out again.
So this is how he copes. When things get bad and even denial canāt stop his thoughts from terrorizing him: Stiles bakes. He bakes and he cooks and he dirties all the dishes and sometimes just canāt seem to stop, lost in a trance of it all. There was a memorable time, a year ago now, when his father had been shot and Stiles had baked so many things that not only did they have muffins for the entire station and the the nurses taking care of his dad, but the pack too. And Deatonās office. And Lydiaās work.
So now, when isaac walks into Stiles and Scottās apartment and sees Stiles, shirtless and rolling out dough at four AM, he panics.
āWhat happened?ā
āI donāt know. I came home to him like this five hours ago. He hasnāt said a word.ā
āIām calling Derek.ā Isaac says, noting the dark shadows under Scottās eyes. He knows that he's has a long day, full of surgeries at the vet, and Isaac is already dragging him to the bedroom while he dials.
Itās early in the morning, and they canāt really leave Stiles alone when heās like this, the longer it goes on the more likely he is to doing something reckless.
āI gotta-ā Scott complains but it doesnāt take much for Isaac to bully him into undressing and climbing onto the bed. The blonde sits on the mattress, one hand stroking Scottās hair while he waits for Derek to pick up.
āIsaac? Whatās wrong?ā Derekās voice is raspy with sleep.
āStiles is baking. And Scott has been trying to get to him for a while.ā
āDidnāt Scott have a double shift today?ā
āYeah, wellā yesterday now.ā
āHow bad is it?ā Isaac scents the air, glancing down at an already sleeping Scott. āCookies by the smells of it.ā
āIāll be right there.ā Isaac hangs up slowly, taking his time in tucking Scott in. He keeps an ear out for Stiles, but out of need to keep his pack safe, Isaac reluctantly pulls himself away from Scott to go check on him.
āStiles?ā No response. Isaac sighs heavily. Heās tired as well. He had a night shift, and itās the only reason heās awake now, because he sleeps during the day most of the time. The man doesnāt so much as acknowledge him. āHey. Itās time for bed.ā He says softly. He comes as close as he dares, giving Stiles ample room to turn around and almost hit him with the cookie sheet in his hands.
Stiles hands are white at the knuckles from gripping it so hard, his brows are knit tight and his jaw is set. His scent is so messed up with the cloying musk of anxiety that everything else about him is swallowed whole by it. Isaac canāt tell whatās wrong, and it makes his own instinct whine at it.
āStiles.ā He calls again. In defeat Isaac slumps into Scottās spot on the couch until Derek comes in.
Isaac can sense the moment the alpha has pulled up to the building, and he's half dozed off before Derek even comes into the apartment.
āGo to bed, Isaac.ā Derek says softly, rubbing a hand over Isaacās neck. The blonde man is down the hall with Scott, already sleeping by the time Derek is shrugged out of his coat. He slips off his shoes, as is Stilesā policy around the apartment (no one ever really follows it though).
Stiles is currently staring down at the fifth sheet of cookies. These ones are different, double chocolate instead of the regular chocolate chip. Heās gripping the metal hard. Thereās no way he didnāt hear Derek come in. They both know this. But he keeps his back to Derek, just as he did Scott and Isaac. Because looking at them, trying to say what happened⦠itāll break the dam.
Derek leans on the kitchen island, the countertop beside the oven is already full, as is the stovetop itself. He crosses his arms and gives Stiles all the time he needs. Thereās nowhere else to put that tray except for where heās blocking.
āStiles.ā He rumbles softly, eyes flashing red. Theyāve done this so many times that itās almost textbook by now. Derek watches the way the manās shoulders pull tight, how his scent gets heavier with sweat.
Stiles turns, jaw tight and eyes cast down at his cookies. He moves around Derek, setting down the tray loudly.
Derek doesnāt say anything else. He carefully ensnares Stiles in a loose hug. One that even a human child could squirm out of. Stiles doesnāt pull away though, just stands still in the loop of Derekās hold.
āHey.ā He says softly, and waits Stiles out. Derek only looks away long enough to make sure that nothing in the oven will burn. Eventually Stiles steps closer. Like thereās magnet in his chest pulling him into Derek.
He doesnāt say anything, but then again he doesnāt have to. Instead Stiles lets himself be reeled in, now that heās made the nonverbal okay with his step forward, he lets Derekās arms swallow him. They donāt suffocate, but they press like iron bands around him. Secure, safe.
In this place, heās safe. Heās fine. Nothing can get him, not even the grief thatās drowning him.
Derek presses his nose into Stilesās hair, then his ear and down to his neck. āWhat happened?ā He asks so quietly that itās barely verbal.
Stiles lets Derek scent him, can feel the tenseness in his alpha when he manages to dig out the grief under all of the anxiety. Stiles drops his forehead on Derekās shoulder.
He breathes in deeply, lets the smell of Derekās aftershave ground him. Itās a subtle soap and lavender mix. Stiles knows because he made it for him, something that wouldnāt affect their sensitive wolf noses.
He remembers his mentor, she was an old woman and heād never thought heād see anyone but his dad as a parental figure. But she filled a void in him heād never known heād had.
āYou have a grand gift. If that silly āDeatonā doesnāt see it, then thatās his loss. A spark like yours is rare.ā Sheād said after their first meeting. In the past three years heād learned more from her than any book legend or spell could.
She lived out in the middle of nowhere, but she ran a shop near UCLA for tourists to support herself. Heād only wandered in out of curiosity. Stiles remembers like it was yesterday, not three and a half years ago.
She stood tall, and had a walking stick that sheād used to smack Stiles with more than once. Heād never thought heād miss the feeling of bruises on his sides. They had the same humor, dryer than the desert, though she was. Sheās always have her hair in a knot of braids. Sometimes stiles would wonder if she ever took them out or if sheād just put them in one day and never took them out for the next decade.
āStiles.ā Derekās voice is more of a feeling than a sound from where heās pressed into the alphas chest. The wolf nudges his jaw with his nose.
āMaggie is gone.ā He manages to whisper.
It feels like Stiles is an ocean in that moment and Derek can do nothing but let the wave of grief pull him asunder and throw him into its depths. He can hardly breathe, feels like his heart has been ripped out and thrown into the ocean with the rest of him.
Magnolia Aimes was a⦠well Derek was never sure what she was exactly, only that she was one of the most amazing woman heād ever met. She was the kindest person, selfless and sheād tell you like it was, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. She was Stilesā mentor for all of this spark stuff that Derek didnāt really understand, not enough to teach Stiles learn anything of value.
āIām sorry.ā He says softly, he knows better than anyone that it doesnāt help but itās also the only thing he can think to say.
Stilesā breath rushes out of him and he slumps into Derek. He doesnāt reply, just presses further into Derekās chest. His cheeks are unabashedly wet, fingers digging tight into Derekās shirt as if the alpha would move away now.
āI--ā
āI know.ā Derek says. He holds one hand on the back of Stilesā head, the other rubbing his back. āLet it out, itās alright.ā
In the quiet of the kitchen, Stiles breaks. He shatters his pieces in Derekās arms and embeds Ā himself into the alphaās skin. They stand there for a long time, crying and hiccoughing until the air is too heavy to draw in evenly and their eyes are dry.
āIs there anything we need to do, for her?ā Derek asks softly when he deems it safe. Stiles nods, pulling away and turning around so his back is to Derek. His shoulders move with every heavy breath he takes, trying to calm himself.
āIāll have to make arrangements.ā He says.
āWe need to make arrangements.ā Derek amends.
Stiles looks over his shoulder with a small smile. āWe will. Tomorrow.ā
āTomorrow.ā Derek agrees. āRight now you should sleep.ā
āAre you staying?ā
Derek looks at the cookies and muffins and other baked goods taking up every conceivable place in the small kitchen. He smiles a little, looking back up to Stiles. He finds it funny how Stiles still thinks Derek could ever say no to him.
āIf you want me to.ā He says. Stiles swallows slowly, dropping his eyes back to his hands that clasp each other nervously. āDo you want me to stay, Stiles?ā Derek asks.
āI--ā He looks back up to Derek like heās searching for something. He must find what heās looking for, because Stiles gives him one of his rare, small and genuine smiles. āYeah.ā
āThen Iāll stay.ā
Stiles leads him to his bedroom, as if Derek didnāt already know where it was. He enters it with familiarity, trailing his fingers over the door before closing it behind them. Stiles hasnāt moved into the room farther than the door.
Derek moves around him, to the dresser and pulling out the sweats he knows are in the bottom left drawer. He pulls off his shirt, and gets ready for bed. Stiles stays by the door, eyes fogged with memories.
āCāmon, bedtime.ā Derek says softly, drawing back Stiles to the present. He pulls off Stilesā clothes and helps him into the sweat pants heād pulled. Then heās leading Stiles to bed, tucking him in one side and crawling into the other.
āShe was like the grandmother I never had.ā He says just before Derek nodded off. Derek hums softly, drawing small shapes on Stilesā shoulder blade while the spark talks. Heās laid on Derekās chest, one hand over the alphaās heart and the other dropped around his waist. āI didnāt realize there was a hole there until she filled it. Maggie was⦠She was one of the best things that ever happened to me.ā
āOnly one?ā Derek asks, smiling a little.
āShut up.ā Stiles mutters, smiling into Derekās shoulder a little. The smile dies quick though. āShe made me realize I wasnāt helpless.ā
āYouāve never been helpless.ā
Stiles hums something but doesn't reply. He doesnāt have to though, because Derek can feel more than hear how his heart jumps.
āI donāt think Iām ever going to be as good as she was at those mirror paintings she would make. The ones where you scry the place and then freeze it to the glass? I was going to make her one for her birthdayā¦ā He says softly.
āI remember. She gave me one last year on Halloween.ā Derek says, thinking back to the beautiful scenery. It looked like sheād just snapped a picture with the worldās highest quality camera, a mountain range with a pack of wolves creeping up the edges in the moonlight. It was a gorgeous piece, and was hanging in the living room back at the loft.
āI bet she has hundreds of them in that old house. I donāt know what weāre going to do with them now.ā
āDid she have any family?ā
āNo, or if she did she never spoke about them. Her parents died when she was young.ā He sighs heavily and Derek presses his face against Stilesā hair. Stiles hums loudly, cuddling closer. āYouāre like a space heater.ā
Derek chuckles, trailing his fingers over one of the small tattoos on Stiles back. They hum faintly with magic, he can feel the small vibrations with his fingertips. Stiles presses into the fingers, closing his eyes.
āYou like it though.ā
āI do.ā Stiles agrees, pressing his icy feet against Derekās legs. āI like it very much.ā
āSleep.ā Derek says, pressing one last smile into Stilesā hair. In the morning (afternoon, as itās nearly five or six by now) they will have to start the sadly familiar steps to figuring out what to do with Maggieās body and contact the Elder Council about her passing. Derek knows it wonāt be easy on any of the pack, they all loved her in their own small ways.
Stiles hauls the blankets closer to his body, and sinks into sleep. Derek wonders at what point heād ended up sharing a bed with Stiles like this without it being strange. He abandons the train of thought as he lets sleep swallow him.
To end 2022, I decided to post a new chapter to Badass Supernatural Immortals 3 because itās the fic that inspired me to get back into writing the last part of this year. This also happens to be one of my favorite chapters. Thank you all for the support this year!
