there’s quite a bit of traffic out, considering it’s a lunch hour. but then, saturdays in town can either be the busiest yet, or more like a graveyard. it’s weather dependent really. there’s plenty of people stocking up for a thanksgiving feast which feels only a stone’s throw away, as well as a bit of very early christmas shopping. in the parkling lot, you can see it all. with one hand on the wheel and the other propped up to support the side of his head, steve’s eyes from behind tinted shades take in the abundance of people, almost dreading the expected venture inside. the car radio hums out a popular tune, something catchy but forgetable once the engine switches off, but for now it serves as a comforting break between the silence of speech.
“ so. you ready kid? “ he asks without looking over. it’s been a long time coming, but it’s for his own good. there’s about twelve stores this side of town, and he planned to hit the most expensive first. get it out the way. “ we’re only looking first, got it? you can try some stuff on, maybe we can find you a new look, but let’s not get carried away. cashiers are like vultures when they see a kid like you, alright? “ he’s so aged with his wisdom, like an ancient village elder, stinking of hairspray and perfumes.
if he is the master, then the prodegy student is dustin. they look almost entirely opposite in the lazy autumnal heat, what with dustin very much still looking like a boy and steve trying his best to look a man. and yet, their mannerisms there that match ( perhaps largely down to dustin immitating, but it counts nonetheless ). he finally looks across, looking down at the kid from the top of his sunglasses, dustin’s image reflected in the lens. “ it’ll be fine. hey, you might even enjoy it. “ might. what kinda kid likes clothes shopping anyway? it was boring enough for him.
