A useful group tutorial which included considering Learning Outcomes and gave me an opportunity to have 15mins to informally present my current work to those not familiar with it and receive feedback. I chose to show my WIP inhale-exhale looped video piece. 

Outcomes

MW spoke in connection with Learning Outcome 21, which relates to specialist and non specialist audiences. He suggested producing several variations of an artist statement, each aimed at specialist and non specialist audiences, in order to communicate the intention behind the work in a way that enables it to be best received. 

MW also suggested collecting audience feedback when exhibiting work, as a way to gain qualitative data. When we research we must be clear on why an audience would be considered specialist or non-specialist.

It was the first time I had seen the piece playing on a large screen, it somehow felt more substantial and demanding. I was reminded of my research about displaying my video work, where I viewed the moving image through a series of screens each with a rectangular hole in. I was drawn into the work, because the image was smaller and my relationship with it felt, consequently more intimate.  

SH suggested I made more explicit connections with, and for me to reflect on the camera obscura work I was involved in before the MA course.

Working with the series of barn time-lapse images taken on April 6th I worked in photoshop to divide the series into 6 smaller collections, each a collection of stills corresponding to different ‘inhale’ and ‘exhale’ movements of the fabric.

The collections obviously didn’t necessarily comprise of the same number of stills, so in order that each series took on the effect of a natural rhythm of a adult human breath I added the appropriate number of tweens. 

I worked on the statistic that an average health adult will breath (one in breath and one out breath) somewhere between 12 and 20 times a minute and the exhale is one third longer than the inhale. As a starting point I worked on 12 breaths a minute, so an inhalation would ultimately last for 2 seconds (48 frames) and an exhalation last for 3 seconds (72frames). Using the time-lapse images plus tweens therefore, I needed to make an animation which lasted a total of 5 seconds. 

At this stage using photoshop I made this small clip which lasted the 2 second inhale.
