yeah I'm just not sure. I tend to think it's CGI because he was just like... standing there (IIRC), so it'd be easy to get a shot of that from early SPN? it would have been more difficult if he'd moved or talked or w/e.
and yeah like I used to make fun of SPN's baaaad SFX all the time but at some point (maybe S8? the S8 finale is the most visually beautiful episode of SPN, no doubt) the effects actually got pretty not-terrible lol
