Massive leaves on such a small sapling! This is my first time successfully growing a sapote (Pouteria sapota) from seed only because fresh seeds aren’t the easiest to come by. By the time it sprouted, I had already forgotten about planting it and it took some time before I was able to identify it. This seed came from a visit to @fruitandspicepark some time last year. So thankful for the people there who decided to create and continue to dedicate their energy to growing such diversity and making the space available to the public. Mamey Sapote, or botanically 'Pouteria sapota.' This tree and fruit is a wonder, a real favorite of mine. These trees were planted around the 1950s, and the cultivars are mostly Magana and Copan. The fruits can take from 18 months up to 2 years to ripen, and because of this, all the stages of development can be seen at certain times on the same tree, there will be flowers, young fruit, and almost ripe fruits. You can tell the fruits are ready to pick when the skin gives a little or by the revered 'scratch test' where a small fleck of skin is removed to reveal the vibrant pink salmon flesh.
