TODAY IN HISTORY: In 1945, in a radio broadcast, Japanese Emperor Hirohito (known as Emperor Showa since his death in 1989) read the Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War, accepting the Potsdam Declaration, which meant the unconditional surrender of Japan. [audio via] This was the first time the Japanese people had heard the voice of the Emperor.
