I am a potemkin player returning after not playing for a fair bit and unika is my worst matchup. as a unika player who has been studying the pot matchup in particular are there any particular openings you exploit or specific potemkin things you find difficult to deal with?
It's funny that you struggle with Unika, because the Potemkin-Unika matchup is actually heavily weighed in Potemkin's favor.
Some of Unika's best tools are her big, heavy normals that she can use to counter, but against Potemkin these are far less useful. Not only are his normals just as big if not bigger, but Hammer Fall and Heat Tackle being armored means punishing them is practically impossible. You can't counter them, you have to block and whiff punish, or grab. You could try and jab them, but Unika's jab is tiny as fuck, it's not worth gambling on.
Furthermore, Unika's enhanced gun dipper is usually pretty safe to throw out as a pressure tool, but Potemkin is so large that if you don't space right, he can just grab you out of it. It's fucked. I can't block, I have to jump or DP, and either can leave me open to get bustered. I can only use gun dipper at basically the max range, and at that range, it's pretty reactable, so it won't catch him off guard very much.
Unika's ability to maintain sustained pressure with her dash cancels is probably the biggest advantage she has over Potemkin, but, yknow, it's Potemkin, so it only takes one wrong guess to lose half your health. It's an agonizing matchup, where you have to play perfectly, and he gets to fuck around.
