my soul bared completely | assassin!au
âSo it was all a lie.â
The words are a heavy condemnation in the tiny motel room Laviâs managed to secure. He wants to recoil, wants to soothe and assuage and assure that it wasnât, except--
Heâd still be lying.
So he sits and swallows his words as Lenalee watches him. For having been through a hell of a night, she still looks incredible. Her hairâs still damp from the cold shower, and the complimentary t-shirt they got with the room is two sizes too big, hanging off her shoulder, but Lavi honestly thinks sheâs the most beautiful thing heâs ever seen.Â
Sheâs beautiful, and sheâs glaring daggers at him from the edge of the tiny bed. Waiting.
âYeah, I lied,â he whispers at length, head down, damp towel chilling the back of his neck as he scrubs at spots of black hair dye on his skin halfheartedly. Now that the adrenalineâs run its course, his body feels heavy; his face hurts, his chest hurts, his head is killing him and every look Lenalee shoots him is another painful reminder of how badly heâs fucked up.
âWas anything you told me true?â She asks, and itâs not a demand, but he can hear in her tone that sheâs begging for something to have mattered.
Lavi breathes out slowly, scrubbing his face with the dingy towel. âWe are the same age, Iâm pretty sure...I might be a couple of years older...â
âThatâs it?â She scoffs, incredulous, and Lavi chances a quick look up to see her drop her face into her hands. âNot even your name? Are you kidding me?â
âI donât have one.â That, at least, makes her pause, peeking out at him through the slats in her fingers. He shrugs weakly. âI was born into this. I just have my designation. They figured giving us names would make it harder for us to...yâknow...get into our roles.â
She drops her hands, and for a second, pity is written clearly across her face before she remembers the situation theyâre in. Lenalee frowns, crossing her arms and deliberately looking away from him.
(Laviâs been stabbed before, and shot and injured in awful ways. He canât think of anything that hurts more than this, at the moment.)
âWhat happens now?â
Thatâs the million dollar question. He sighs again, tossing the towel onto the floor. âDo you trust me?â
âOf course not.â Lenalee raises an eyebrow at him, as if offended he would even ask that. âYou just told me you were sent to kill me.â
âI havenât.â Lavi mutters defensively, standing to pace the small room. âAnd Iâm not gonna. Iâm gonna keep you safe.âÂ
Lenalee watches him, unimpressed.Â
âIâmâŠâ Lavi sits on the cheap wooden dresser across from her, holding his hands up pleadingly. âIâm not⊠Iâm compromised, alright? I canât go back to the Organization, and if I give myself up theyâll kill us both. I know what Iâd do in this situation, butâŠâ
Here he stops, swallowing past the thick lump in his throat, wincing as his voice cracks. âI lied to you, a lot, and I donât want to do it anymore. So⊠so I guess what Iâm saying is, itâs your choice. Whatever you want me to do, Iâll do it. If you want me to just...leave then Iâll do it, and if you want me to stay I will. But Iâm not gonna force your hand more than I already have in this shitty situation I put you in.â
âWhy?âÂ
Lavi looks up, offering a weak smile. âYouâre gonna laugh.â
âThis isnât really a laughing matter.â She waves her hand to encompass the shitty little room theyâre in, then to their borrowed clothes. âSo why?â
âBecauseâŠâ He shrugs, running a hand through his damp hair, staring at the faint black stains left behind on his palm. âBecause Iâm in love with you.âÂ
The silence hangs thick between them, but he canât look at her; his words sound so⊠inappropriate? Inconsequential? He would have said âI love youâ but he knows enough to know this isnât it. If he had more time to simmer in the thought, maybe he would have said he was in love with the idea of her, with how she feels like a home heâs never had, but thereâs no time for philosophizing about how much she means to him.
Lenalee lets out a shaky breath. âLetâs⊠weâll come back to that.â
âThatâs fine.â Itâs better than outright rejection.
Lavi starts at the strangled groan Lenalee makes, patting her cheeks as if sheâs bracing herself for something. Ready, she looks up at him, determination in her eyes. âAre they going to hurt my brother?â
âProbably not? They need him.â Komuiâs biggest asset to the Organization has always been his brain; the idea behind getting rid of Lenalee would be to make Komui more pliable and easier to manage for members within the Organization. Even with everything up in the air, Laviâs almost positive the elder Lee will survive the ordeal.
He says as much, in the interest of not lying, and isnât too surprised when Lenalee kicks out at him. âOw!â
âDonât just say it like that?â She sputters back at him, crossing her arms.Â
âYou asked!âÂ
They lapse into silence again, and Lavi lets his head drop back against the wall. Dimly he can hear the TV in the next room, and hopes their conversation isnât loud enough to carry across. âSo... like I said⊠your call.â
âThatâs such bullshit.â Lenalee says, and though sheâs livid her tone is exhausted. âI didnât ask for this.â
âI know.â Lavi swallows past the lump in his throat and ignores the pain in his chest. Itâs just guilt. âIâm sorry.â
âHow would you get out of this?â Lenalee shifts on the bed, the springs creaking in protest. âWhat super secret assassin tricks can get us out of this?â
âWellâŠâ Lavi shrugs. âIf it was just me, Iâd disappear. I donât have any real documents, and I know enough people that I could just get new ones made. Just lay low until things die down.â
âSo youâd just run? What about my brother? There are still people after him!â Lenalee sits up, and looks just about ready to throttle him, which would be justified on her part, considering everything.Â
âYou asked what I would do!â If the situation wasnât so dire, this would almost be like the nights they would spend watching movies, arguing the pros and cons of ridiculous scenarios, instead of the very real possibility they might just die.
âOkay, then, what would you do if you had to fix things? Save my brother from assassins?â Lenalee presses, fisting her hands into the hem of her shirt.Â
Lavi slides off the dresser to the floor, looking up at her helplessly. âI donât know! I donât even know what Iâm doing here! I donât know how to help, thatâs not what we do!â
The groan of frustration from Lenalee gets them a thump from next door, and they fall into silence again.Â
âWhat if we just expose them all? The Organization, all of it? Itâll be a media storm, and if anything happens to Komui then everyone will know whoâs behind it.â Lenalee says slowly, drumming her fingers against her thighs, her eyes distant.Â
The idea is so ludicrous that it makes Lavi choke on a laugh. âAre you kidding me? Thereâs hundreds of thousands of people involved, thereâs no way!â
Lenalee waves her hand like thatâs the least of their worries, the distant look fading into something brighter. Plotting. âIf they wanted to get Komui under their thumb, that means he has to know something, right? Otherwise why bother? I can get into my brotherâs files, and you can help me blow everything open.â
âYouâll be putting yourself in more danger if you do!â Every second that ticks by, he can see the idea coalescing in her head, and he knows her enough to know that look on her face means business. Heâd have better luck trying to stop a moving train with his bare hands. âLenalee, pleaseâŠâ
She raises an eyebrow at him, sharp and unamused. âYouâre going to fix this one way or another. You said it was my choice. This is my choice.â
He swallows his arguments, but heâs not happy about it.
