“So where’re you from?” Judging from the tilt of his head, he was flirting with her, which was... Not unwelcome, actually. Her favorite part of college so far was that it tended to weed out the idiots.
“Amity Park,” She answered, smiling. “You?”
David’s eyebrows raised, and he didn’t answer her question. “Isn’t that the town they used to cover up the whole asteroid apocalypse thing?”
Jazz’s smile dropped in favor of a look of confusion. “What do you mean ‘cover up?’ ”
“Um... They said they turned the Earth intangible. There’s no way that’s possible.”
“Well, it wasn’t easy. It took over a thousand ghosts--”
The young man looked at her like she was insane. “You don’t seriously believe in ghosts... right?”
“...You don’t?”
He scoffed, “You really think the dead can come back and haunt us.”
Jazz tried to straighten her posture, without seeming like she was on the defensive. “Well, there’s some debate as to how a ghost actually forms, but regardless, you can’t deny that there are... beings... that display human emotions, and have certain abilities resembling those typically associated with urban legends referencing apparitions of the dead. Colloquially, they are known as ghosts.”
David was flat out staring at her.
“What?” She asked.
“You’re brainwashed.” He answered.
Jazz rolled her eyes.
---
“So, what proof do you have that ghosts are real?” The chair across from her was suddenly occupied by an annoyingly insistent undergrad.
Jazz didn’t look up from her textbook. “ Search for ‘Amity Ghost attack’ on YouTube. I’m sure you’ll find something.”
“See, I did that, and it mostly seemed to be blurry footage of lights going off fifty feet over the city.”
“The highschool is Casper High. A lot of attacks happen there, and that’s where the most reckless photographers are.”
“... You do know how easy it is to edit that stuff, right?”
She looked up and replicated his tone. “You do know you can’t photoshop real life, right?”
He rolled his eyes. “So, you’ve actually, in person, seen a ghost.”
She smirked. “I’m Jazz Fenton, dumbass. My brother is a ghost.”
---
“Can you stop staring at me and work on this lab, please?”
“I’m just trying to decide if you’re lying or just crazy.”
“Seven point three five six centimeters.”
“You’re too smart to just be crazy.”
“If you don’t want to write things down you can do the measurements.”
“But you also seem too nice to be lying.”
“David!”
---
“So, how’s Danny?”
“He’s fine.”
“Caught any cool ghosts lately?”
“He’s made friends with a couple actually, thank you for asking.”
“Cool, cool.... So, you’ve like... actually seen these friends of his, right?”
“I’ve been possessed before. I don’t need any more proof!”
“So, I’ve been looking into cults--”
“I am not. In. A. CULT.”
---
“So, how’s David?”
Jazz groaned, letting her head fall against her desk, and she could hear Danny laughing even if she could no longer see his face over the computer screen. “Infuriatingly wrong, as usual.”
Danny laughed again. “I don’t see why it bothers you so much, I mean, you get along with him fine otherwise, right?”
Jazz looked up to see Danny smirking. “He thinks you’re a liar. He thinks I’m brainwashed!”
“To be fair, I am a liar. I lied a lot. To a lot of people. For a long time.” He said it like he was trying to break it to her gently, but, like the entire situation, it didn’t seem to bother him the way Jazz felt it should.
“But not any more!” She hated the way it sounded like she was whining. Danny always tended to bring out the three-year-old in her. “You should come visit. shove an ectoblast in his smug little face.”
Danny hesitated just a little too long, and the laugh he let out was just a little too forced. “Yeah, I’ll, uh... have to do that.”
Jazz looked at him sharply, trying to interpret his hesitation. He kept his face neutral, a faint smile at his lips, but she wasn’t exactly being subtle in her examination. If he hadn’t been hiding something, he’d have asked her what she was looking at by now.
Jazz broke the silence. “You want him to think you’re a liar?”
Danny shrugged, but his head jerked slightly to the left, enough of an unconscious shake that Jazz could tell she wasn’t quite on the mark.
“... You don’t want him to believe in ghosts?”
Danny’s mouth opened and closed, before he shrugged again, his shoulder’s not quite returning to their relaxed position. An uncomfortable silence fell between the siblings, as Danny shifted awkwardly, and Jazz knew that body language.
“You don’t want him to think of you as part ghost.”
Danny looked away.
“Danny, there’s nothing wrong with--”
“I’m different, Jazz!” Danny interrupted her. “I... Maybe I’m not a freak, and maybe it’s not a bad thing, but... I don’t know... Maybe I like thinking that there are people out there who think it’s all a myth. A hoax. A bedtime story...”
“He thinks it’s a conspiracy.”
“That’s better than thinking I’m a superhero. Or a savior. Or a demon."
You wouldn’t say that if you actually had to interact with him on a daily basis.”
“Yeah, well, maybe I just like the idea that, I don’t know, someone out there still thinks I’m, well... human.”
