Summary: All the hair on the back of Lan Wangji’s neck stands straight. He finds himself pressed between the trunk of the tree at his front, and Wei Wuxian at his back. Wei Wuxian has a firm grip on the wrist which carries Bichen, and on his left upper arm. It feels...proprietary. Suddenly, and entirely inappropriately, a very old, very shameful memory surfaces, of a long-ago dream from which he had woken sweaty and shaking. The place on his chest where the resentment pierced him begins to throb painfully. Wei Wuxian breathes heavily against his ear for half a moment longer, and Lan Wangji feels himself flush.

Or; reuniting with Wei Wuxian after their year apart is complicated by a mysterious and deadly curse.

My comments: Ah, this was so full of all the best things: lwj too tongue-tangled to express himself, wwx convinced that he's more annoying than anything else, a sex curse that forces you to enact the first sexual thought you have after it strikes you. And lwj, well, he's had this dream from all the way back to the sunshot campaign, with a yiling patriarch who just TAKES... and it's much too dishonorable a thing to pressure wwx into, and so he resigns himself to dying....

Lan Wangji claps a hand to his mouth and, to his horror, feels his mouth opening to answer despite having no intention to do so. Clamping it shut again takes a great effort.

The one where Lan Wangji can't stop talking, and a mild amount of chaos ensues.

My comments: Ah, this was a lovely balance of humor and feels, and I am digging it.

In which, during a conference, lwj suddenly realizes that his internal narration... isn't internal after all. Wwx quickly whisks him off, but it's struggle to not say the things he's been bottling up inside for so many years....

Excerpt 1: Lan Wangji frowns at the reminder. He will have to deal with those Jin curators after this. And anyone else who is still giving Wei Ying a hard time.

Wei Ying bursts out laughing. "Too cute, Lan Zhan, Too cute! I really should tuck you in my pouch and carry you with me everywhere."

Yes, please, Lan Zhan thinks, but has the presence of mind to hastily slap over his mouth so all that comes out is a muffled "mmph." Wei Ying looks at him curiously and Lan Wangji's cheeks heat. If this is what it feels like to be a normal person, always blurting out whatever random thoughts cross your mind, then he does not care for it.

Excerpt 2: "All right, all right," Wei Ying says, mollifying. "It's just he's a little vulnerable right now. So it would be better for everyone to keep this quiet and limit who he interacts with."

"Too late," Jiang Wanyin says, meeting Lan Wangji's eyes.

"Ahaha," Wei Ying laughs weakly as Lan Wangji gets out of bed. "Lan Zhan, you're awake! Why don't you go prepare some tea while I see Jiang Cheng out?" He takes Lan Wangji's arm, attempting to steer him in the other direction.

"I don't want him here," Lan Wangji tells him, then turns to Jiang Wanyin. "I don't want you here."

Jiang Wanyin's eyebrows raise to the ceiling. "He seems fine to me," he says, voice impossibly dry.

Summary: Lan Zhan’s features are smooth. He has a hand behind his back, as usual, and when he’s a few paces away he stops. He always could execute a perfect bow, the angles of his body textbook.

“Hi,” Wei Wuxian says stupidly.

Lan Zhan straightens. He doesn’t blink as he says, “Wei Wuxian.” His eyebrows make the barest arc upward. “What is the nature of your visit?”

My comments: In which wwx's planned exultant return falters and dies a frigidly disdained death. Lwj treats him like a stranger... even worse... and wwx suffers some tasty angst before figuring out there's more at work here than his famously poor memory mistaking every glance lwj has ever given him.

Excerpt: ‘ Curses that can make someone who used to look at you like you personally hung the moon be rude and dismissive to you’ is a little tricky to search, as a concept. Wei Wuxian, without bothering to ask, has hauled an incredible amount of literature back to his guest quarters. The lock to the forbidden section wasn’t much of a challenge to a few clever talismans.

Summary: A ghost takes root in Wei Wuxian's body.

My comments: Oh, wow, this hits harder than I expected. Wwx gets possessed by a skin-stealer, and it's truly horrifying. Every direction he tries to turn to fight it off fails, and he's kind of being eaten alive, and he can't tell lwj for Reasons. He gets totally boxed in, and it really had me on the edge of my seat.

Author says, "I'm a big fan of horror that takes genuine, deep-rooted, emotional fears and builds the story around those. So that's what I'm going for here." And yep, they succeeded.

Excerpt: *some of this is such poetry*

When he awakens, his body once again drifts into realness. He’s used to it by now; feeling reborn each morning; slowly filling out his own edges and curves like sand growing shape in an hourglass.

Summary:  Marriage, Lan Wangji knows, is not about love.

He’d known this, he’d always known this; Uncle had always been very clear on that. Marriage is about duty. Marriage is about allying Gusu Lan with another sect. It is Lan Wangji’s job in this to ensure profitable trade for the disciples of the Cloud Recesses. It might even, one day, require him to move away from his home and into that of his spouse. His father had married for love and look where that had gotten him; Lan Wangji would never succumb to the same fate. So no, marriage was not about liking his spouse and being liked in return.

My comments:  So very poignant and sweet and lovely.

My comments:  Wei Wuxian attempts a seduction (by telling a big, fat - sexy - lie). Lan Wangji is tongue-tied and... very interested. Featuring Lan Wangji's lacy overrobe (thank you costume designers!), a very confident wwx, and a confused but appreciative lwj.

Summary:  The second time Lan Zhan said Wei Ying, come back, Wei Wuxian did.

My comments:  This story is filled with so many gems that I'm just gonna go on a cut-and-paste spree. I cut bits that were funny, because much of the story is, but it's also FEELS, about letting go of the soft anguish of loneliness and connecting with and trusting each other. It's about settling into and defining a home. The dialog is fantastic, and it's so, so intimate. Just lovely.

Excerpt 1:  “Have you eaten?” Lan Zhan asked, following Wei Wuxian’s gaze. “There’s soup.”

“What color is it,” Wei Wuxian said suspiciously.

“Red,” said Lan Zhan.

Marry me, Wei Wuxian almost said with his actual fucking mouth. Gods, he’d been alone for too long; he’d been talking to himself pretty much constantly and had thus become accustomed to saying whatever he wanted, confident that no one was listening. But now someone very much was listening, and he needed to adjust his behavior accordingly. Instead of proposing to Hanguang-jun, he said, “Thank the heavens.” Then he went and plopped down in front of the table.

Excerpt 2:  “Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan said mildly. “There is no need to antagonize the junior sect members.”

“That’s right!” said Jingyi, sticking out his tongue.

“The disrespect,” said Wei Wuxian. “Does the title Yiling Laozu mean nothing anymore? Do I not strike fear into your tiny baby hearts? I feel like I should strike more fear than I am currently striking.”

“They have seen you with the rabbits,” Lan Zhan said gravely.

Wei Wuxian buried his face in his hands. “Lan Zhan ah Lan Zhan.... This is terrible, I’m not scary at all anymore.... Maybe I should go on a crime spree.”

“Yes!” said Jingyi.

“No,” said Lan Zhan.

“Can we come?” said Jingyi. Sizhui looked worried.

“Maybe,” said Wei Wuxian.

“No,” said Lan Zhan.

“Unfortunately you cannot,” amended Wei Wuxian.

Jingyi’s shoulders slumped. Sizhui, visibly relieved, patted his shoulder in consolation.

Excerpt 3:  Wen Ning didn’t seem to realize it, but he’d very much earned a spot on Lan Zhan’s list of approved people, places, and things. Categories: ‘People Lan Zhan Trusts With Wei Ying and Sizhui’s Well-being,’ ‘People Jiang Wanyin Hates,’ and ‘People Who Do Not Make Excessive Noise.’
