Last night I got to fulfil a long time dream... performing John Berryman’s poem Dream Song 14. I memorised this poem over 6 years ago and have never found the right place to recite it, what with its ominous first line: “Life, friends, is boring” and the absurd final stanza that descends into recursive dream logic, there never seemed to be the right context. With a minor rewrite (gently incriminating a well known comedian and various Fringe venues), a voice deeper than usual owing to spruiking PO PO MO CO on the Gluttony corner all evening, and a made-up face and costume (including top hat) that suggests Gothic Victorian dandy, I intoned: “I conclude now I have no / Inner Resources / because I am heavy bored”. I have found endless play in the character of The Doctor in Nosfer-ARSE-tu and it was “delightful”, as The Doctor would say, to share my passion for poetry to a receptive audience in the spirit of pantomime, idiocy, The Fringe (and filling time because there was a tech problem). Thank you Midnight Moonlighters. Thank you House of Raj. Thank you Mr. Berryman. #popomoco #rajhouse #HouseofRaj #nosferARSEtu #dreamsongs #berryman (at Raj House)
