When technology is made more portable and convenient, it almost always comes at a cost. There are few cases where a new technology completely eliminates all the problems of old technologies, such as semiconductors and the end of vacuum tubes – but most of the time there is something that needs to be sacrificed. Switching to digital from a vinyl means that your information basically weighs nothing – but it also means a loss of quality as information is lost in the process. Even the MP3 player has to sacrifice quality for quantity – and most of us are okay with that. I think that we can all remember the days when a 3 second WAV recording could not even fit on portable media.Now that we have our portable music devices figured out, the next step is to make them more powerful. Having quality sound means a need for more memory as well as battery life. This also means that the device music be bigger. Are we still willing to make this trade? Pono certainly feels that higher quality music may be worth the added few inches of thickness.
