A malu is a female-specific Samoan 'tatau'/tattoo that covers the woman's legs from the upper thighs to just below the knees Traditionally the malu is something a woman proudly endures to honor culture & family. She knows she must first tolerate excruciating pain especially done using traditional methods in order to do so It is quite rare to see a Samoan woman expose her malu in public. My understanding is the malu is considered 'sacred' to be protected, and one should avoid exposing her malu in public unless she's in full traditional Samoan wear about to dance the Samoan Siva.
