this video got me thinking about celine a bit differently. Usually I take Celine at her word when she tells the audience about Rumi’s mom Mi-Yeong being dead and her dad being a demon. But i also usually headcanon that Celine had some unrequited love for Mi-Yeong because she took Rumi in. But not cleaning her grave is making me question that.
1) First off it could just be Celine is resentful to Mi-Yeong for a lot of things. Like having a baby with a demon, dying and leaving Celine with her kid etc. this would fit with how I see her relationship with Mi-Yeong. Like she loves her enough to go to the grave with rumi frequently but resents her to point where she feels like cleaning her grave washes away “Mi-Yeongs sins”.
2) Another reason why her grave isn’t cleaned is because Celine doesn’t feel worthy to touch the headstone. Its implied the grave is on private land (probably the hunters land) so there aren’t volunteers to do it. In some concept art/footage Celine is the one who kills Mi-Yeong by accident. The shame from that would be immense and I could see why Celine can’t bring herself to touch Mi-Yeong again because the last time she did she killed her. More evidence for this theory is she has Rumi call her Celine. She doesn’t feel worthy of receiving the love and recognition of being a mother.
3) A more simple explanation is that cleaning the headstone is something hunters don’t do. Like nature reclaiming a person is representative of the honmoon incorporating their soul. In my own culture Koliva is spread on the casket and grave to symbolize the resurrection of life. I could see hunters viewing nature reclaiming a grave in a similar light.
4) My assumption if Celine’s love for Mi-Yeong might be wrong entirely as well. I could totally see a more sinister version of Celine. Like she didn’t trust Mi-Yeong at all from her relationship with a demon and thought it best to take Rumi away from them. Celine having a fake gravestone for Mi-Yeong to help sell the story to Rumi that her mom and dad are dead so she never goes looking for them would be something i see this version of celine doing. And since the grave isn’t real there isnt any pressure to clean it. This does require Mi-Yeong to be hidden from the public at least.
5) Another idea I had to explain it is Celine being Rumi’s bio mom. She had a relationship with a demon and Mi-Yeong and Thirdlight saw her as a failure and left. That would fill Celine with a lot of shame so much so that she might lie to Rumi. By telling Rumi that she’s Mi-Yeongs daughter not hers it distances herself from her “sins”. Faults and fears should never be seen right so making it impossible for Rumi to see Celine’s faults. This also does require at least Mi-Yeong disappearing to the public and for who was pregnant in sls to not be publicly known. this makes this unlikely in my book but not impossible.
6) Mi-Yeong could have been the demon not Rumi’s father which could also be why Celine doesn’t clean the grave. She could view Mi-Yeong as a traitor to being a hunter and thus not worthy of the clean grave.
There a lot more reasons why her grave isn’t cleaned but I’m a polyhunter truther through and through so option 2 and 3 are what I lean towards, but I could totally see the other options being true too.
One last thing Mi-Yeong’s uncleaned grave could also be symbolism for Celine teaching Rumi to hide. The grave has fresh apples and flowers which directly contrasts the over grown headstone. Celine wants Rumi to hide her patterns but not deal with them. Rumi canonically wears makeup over them sometimes to hide them, its temporary but it masks them. The apples and flowers serve a similar function, they on the surface make it look they care but the overgrown headstone is still uncleaned. the apples will rot or be eaten and the flowers will wilt. no amount of apples and flowers will fix the headstone just as no amount of long sleeves and makeup will fix Rumi’s shame. Cleaning the headstone would mean fixing the shame that Celine has regardless of the scenario just like rumi’s patterns being iridescent would mean she fixed her shame about having them.
