Spaceflight and Cold War super powers scoops... 40 years ago, the first co-ed spaceflight mission, Russian Soyuz T-7 carried female cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya to the Salyut-7 space station. Two years later in July 1984, during Soyuz T-12 mission, Savitskaya became the first female spacewalker working 3 hours 35 minutes outside Salyut-7 ! Between 1976 and 1987, tough Poljot 3133 chronographs were the norm followed by the 31659 chronograph version from 1987 to 1993! (Photo: MoonwatchUniverse)

French Air Force pilot LtColonel Jean-Loup Chrétien became the first French spacefarer as he flew onboard Soyuz T-6 to the Russian Salyut-7 space station. Each of the crew-members wore at least two wristwatches... Vladimir Dzhanibekov wore an Omega Speedmaster 125 chronograph and a Russian-made grey wings dial Poljot 3133 chronograph. Aleksandr Ivanchenkov also wore a grey dial Poljot 3133 Russian Air Force pilot watch. French cosmonaut Jean-Loup Chrétien wore a cream dial quartz Yema Spationaute chronograph LCD wristwatch. March 2, 1978 ... 1st Intercosmos space flight mission ! Exactly 43 years ago, the Soviet-Union launched Soyuz-28, the very first Intercosmos spaceflight mission, in a series of 18 cooperative flights carrying a guest cosmonaut, strengthening diplomatic bonds through science & technology. Note in this prelaunch press photo, Czech cosmonaut Vladimir Remek clearly wore a black dial Poljot 3133 military chronograph. The 1974 to 1991 period of Soviet-Russian spaceflight is a very interesting wristwatch-wise period as besides East-block watches, Swiss Omega watches made their entry in the Soviet-Russian manned space program and lots of cosmonauts started to use the Omega Flightmaster, Omega Speedmaster Mk III and the manual winding Omega 861 Speedmaster. 1976 - 2021 = 45 years Russian military chronographs in space ! In 1976, Soviet-Russian cosmonauts started to wear the Russian Poljot 3133 military chronographs as standard time piece during Soyuz spaceflight missions to the Salyut-5 & -6 space stations. About 50 cosmonauts have worn these military chronographs during 30 Soyuz spaceflight missions between 1976 and 1994. The black dial OKEAH version was the first to be worn during Soyuz 23 (1976) while the gray dial military wing Shturmanskie 31659 version was still worn during Soyuz TM-16 to the Mir space station (1993). In March 1994, the gray dial was still seen during training for the Soyuz TM-20 EuroMir spaceflight mission, worn by Yuri Gidzenko. (Photo: MoonwatchUniverse)
