PokéDec Challenge Day 4: Favorite Ground type

Trying to do another grotesquely-creepy pokéthrope! This one was somewhat inspired by Clayface from DC Comics.

Conceptually, Palossand is a super neat creature. I mean, yeah, it looks like a goofy sand-castle with the shovel still in it, but its Ghost typing and the way it drains life from those who stick their hands in makes me think of it as a living quicksand. Also, apparently Palossand sits on a pile of dry bones, so its design might also be inspired by burial plots. That also makes it a castle with its own catacombs? It’s a very clever design.

Sidenote: In Pokémon Moon, I decided to nickname my party after fancy cocktails (for example, I named my Mudbray “Moscow Mule”). There is apparently a drink called “Sex on the Beach,” which to me is the PERFECT nickname for a sand monster caught on a seashore, but the game’s censor wouldn’t let me do that, so I shortened it to “On The Beach.” Oh well, you get the idea!

PokéDec Challenge Day 16: Favorite Psychic type

Is it acceptable to start drawing the next day’s Pokécember prompt if I stay up past midnight? I’m going to bed after posting this, I promise! I might even re-draw it after getting some sleep, depending on how hideous it looks after I’ve become well-rested. Then again, when it comes to pokéthropes, maybe “hideous” is a good thing...

PokéDec Challenge Day 2: Favorite Fighting type

My first encounter with a Kommo-o in-game was actually in the wild, while looking for Jangmo-o. I didn’t realize that Jangmo calling for help could result in summoning Kommo, so needless to say I was a bit startled when the massive thing appeared on the screen. I caught him though! He has served my party well with his type combination. A Fighting/Dragon type! How cool is that?

I also like that it seems to be based on a komodo dragon, my favorite species of lizard. I remember when I was little, going to the library and checking out a book about reptiles. I was blown away by reading about how large (and dangerous!) komodo dragons are. These animals are pretty much the closest thing there is to actual dragons.

Imagine a pokémon trainer surviving a Kommo-o’s bite, only to be transformed into a werelizard during a full moon!

PokéDec Challenge Day 17: Favorite Ghost type

A little more than halfway through the challenge now! If I’m being honest, I’m getting a little burnt out from these daily draws, but I still think I can do the rest of them!  Except MAYBE the days that I’ll be out of town. That could be tricky. We’ll see.

Anyway, Trevenant is a hella scary ghost tree. They actually have a unique attack called Forest’s Curse that temporarily turns the opponent into a Grass-type monster. I imagine that a Trevenant pokéthrope would be that happening to a human!

PokéDec Challenge Day 7: Favorite Water type

Wishiwashi is not only one of my favorite water-type pokémon, but also one of my favorite pokémon overall; I’m talking maybe top 10. It’s another one of those conceptually-cool creatures: a fish that, when threatened, transforms into a “demon” via schooling. The idea of its shimmering eyes (“tears”) being what lures allies from miles away is very clever for a water monster (the whole thing about tears being made of salt water, fishing lures often being highly reflective, and so on). I guess my favorite pokémon are the ones whose designs pile a lot of concepts into a neat bundle.

Gameplay-wise, it’s just an incredibly powerful monster to have on one’s party. Remember that post going around about the guy who beat the game with a party of six wishiwashi? I never understood the hate; it’s a badass-dang monster, that’s why! Admittedly, though, it can get a little tricky once the schooling phase ends at low HP.

I like thinking about a werewishiwashi (say that ten times fast!) being a generic fish-man, but with a mecha-like armor made of lots of other fish. Never mind that lycanthropes typically have to bite to spread the curse, yet wishiwashi doesn’t have teeth!

It’s been a long challenge, but we made it! I hope you guys have enjoyed my theme of pokéthropes. I think I’ll try something a little different with the challenge next year!

We had our first snow of the season today, so I figured as long as I was choosing Sawsbuck for today’s prompt, I’d might as well use its Winter form!

PokéDec Challenge Day 12: Favorite Dragon type

To avoid drawing a Tyrantrum pokéthrope as an attractive bearded dude (as is my temptation), I tried my best to make this design extra monstrous. So, human skull on a t-rex body, unkempt feathery leg hairs, lanky limbs, and lots of teeth it is! I suppose he still has a bit of charm, though.
