Digitalis purpurea. Also known as, Foxglove, Witches Gloves, Dead Men's Bells, Bloody Fingers, and Fairy Thimbles. Foxglove is part of the Plantaginaceae family. While it is poisonous to humans, an extract from this plant is actually used in treatments for heart conditions. The plant is well known as the original source of the heart medicine digoxin. Some sources quote a legend about this poisonous flower saying "It can raise the dead, and kill the living." How inviting! I found this beautiful plant at the local art museum. I guess it was fitting as Van Gogh used this plant to treat his epilepsy. I particularly love the folklore and mythology around this plant. Foxgloves attract faerie energy, as they are a favorite flower of the fae. If you see Foxglove moving with no wind present, this is a sign of faeries moving around the plant. Some sources state foxes wore the flowers on their paws as they raided rural areas. Hence the name, Foxglove. The areas surrounding fox dens reportedly would be full of poisonous plants, such as Foxglove. Scandinavian legend attributed the name to the folklore of fairies that taught the foxes to ring the flowers to worn each other of hunters. Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers and blossoming plants, showed Juno how to impregnate herself without a man by touching the flowers upon her breasts and belly. This is how she became pregnant with Mars.
