Debut EP "Pogboy", Released April 17, 2020

Brittany born, Felix Rabin, took up guitar at 15 when the family had moved to Switzerland, spending all his spare time, picking up ideas, and learning his craft, through France and Switzerland, then gigs in the Montreux Jazz Club. Here, he had the opportunity to meet many established musicians, including, a chance sit down chat with Quincy Jones in 2013. His first named gig came in 2015, following with tours across Europe and into the UK by 2016, finding his path taking him to the legendary 100 Club. 2019 has brought headline tours, and a recording session in LA, where this 6 track EP was recorded. 2020 has started with the accolade of ‘Best Act’, at The Giants Of Rock Festival, and has been asked back to the main stage in 2021.

So far so good, this EP, is due for release on April 17th, titled ‘Pogboy’, from his use of his effects pedal. Vocally his voice cannot hide his youth, and no doubt will change with time, though dark, airless, smokey venues are history. The voice tends to pick up a more colourful timbre with the years. Felix still delivers anyway, and opening track ‘Walk’, is sweet tasting, soulful rock, that includes trumpet and sax vying with the honeyed guitar. ‘Moving On’, and there’s a bit more bite, demonstrably more rock, with horns on. Pumping drum and bass, up the rock level further, stepping up from the ‘softer’ pop rock opening tracks, horns are still blow through, ‘Say’, before Felix squawks into a lovely guitar lead, mixing it with a nice sax attack. ‘Angels’, keeps in the pulsed bass groove, as Felix lets loose, with a tasty, dirty lead, keyboards following behind.  

The big meaty song is a slow gorgeous, bluesy ballad, ‘Death’, that features a beautiful muted jazz trumpet, that talks of late, nights, walking down neon lit streets. Well over 7 minutes, Felix has room for a superb solo, before melting down past more low trumpet, absolutely stunning, it will linger in your mind. The final song is ‘Gone’, with the horns adding a soulful edge the funkier rhythm, seems there is a smokier edge to Felix’s voice as he has progressed through the songs, ‘Gone’, has a terrific trumpet blast, switching to a stab of sax from Mark Pender and Joe Sublett. Changing tempo drives the song forward as Felix adds a touch of colouration to his lead, before fading away.

Felix Rabin is going to be a name to look out for, he’s is making an impact across Europe and now the UK, and is sure to turn up in venues and festivals across the country. The EP is a great starting block on which to build, worth getting hold of and watching him grow.
