How do we get disenfranchised people to vote?
We start by understanding why people are disenfranchised; we need to present the framework with our community's stories. We need to share why some of our communities cannot vote and tackle it from the roots. Is it that people are not able to vote because the naturalization process got more expensive? Is it that voters are not getting information in their preferred language? Is it that voters are learning at the last minute that their polling sites are closed or have changed by the time elections arrive? Ultimately, people will vote if we equip and inform them accurately. With this in mind, we recommend three things that you can do:
Volunteer at a citizenship drive
If you speak another language, donate your time to call speakers and invite them to vote.
We can assess and build long-term opportunities to improve voter turnout by documenting what happens during election time, sign up for a volunteer shift during election day or work as a poll watcher.
If you are limited with time, you can always start by ensuring everyone in your family votes, text, or call them. We assure you that it will make a difference.
We also have to note that voting has not always been accessible to everyone and encouraging voters to participate does not have a one pronged approach. To reach Latinx voters especially during this pandemic, we have launched a handful campaigns:
Empowering the Latina Electorate - a fellowship program dedicated to serving a key aspect of the Latinx electorate, Latina voters in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, and North Carolina.
Art Gallery - a virtual gallery with the support of 15 fantastic artists. Their work explores ways to be civically engaged and connect us with our heritage. It also includes as progressive and original playlist from DJ Nino.
Long Time Coming - an anthem that will get us dancing to the polls. A musical project spearheaded by Las Cafeteras to inspire and motivate voter engagement across the country while addressing some of the most pressing issues, including police brutality and racial justice.
