I Tried to Make Lasagna with Only Things in My Pocket (and Regret Is Now an Ingredient)
It began with hunger and hubris.
Sunday afternoon. No groceries. One (1) functioning brain cell. I boldly declared to my roommate: âI can definitely make lasagna with just whatâs in my pockets.â
Inventory Check:
4 crumpled Wertherâs Originals
A bus transfer from two weeks ago
1 glitter pen (uncapped)
Chewing gum (unchewed, linted)
Emergency cheese slice (not an exaggerationâNoodleburg requires this by law)
A fortune cookie, smashed, with the fortune: âNot today, culinary warrior.â
Chapstick (mango)
A Lego
One single packet of Taco Bell Fire Sauce
83 cents in loose coins
And so, Pocket Lasagna was born.
Step 1: The Noodle Layer
Lasagna typically has pasta. I had no pasta. What I did have was bus transfer paper, which is, technically, rectangular and stackable.
I layered three transfers into a dish and muttered âal denteâ with the confidence of a man spiraling.
Step 2: The Sauce
The Fire Sauce packet provided enough liquid to write a passive-aggressive note in cursive. I added water (tap, vintage) and whisked it with the mango chapstick for âmouthfeel.â
To thicken it: pocket lint. I do not wish to talk about this further.
Step 3: The Cheese
The emergency cheese slice was placed lovinglyâno, spirituallyâacross the top layer like a caution flag. I attempted to âgrateâ it using a house key. This only made it angry.
I sprinkled the Wertherâs shards on top like caramelized breadcrumbs. They immediately melted into a bubbling tan swamp.
Step 4: Bake
Without an oven, I placed the dish on a windowsill in direct sun and yelled motivational phrases at it for 45 minutes.
The Lego melted. The chapstick did something⊠forbidden.
Final Result:
It was a lasagna in the same way a taxidermied squirrel is technically a mammal. You could eat it, but the gods would turn away.
The roommate entered, sniffed the air, and backed out wordlessly, like a raccoon realizing the trash was sentient.
I took one bite. My tongue said âwhatâs happening.â My stomach said âunsubscribe.â My heart said âyou tried.â
Conclusion:
Could I have gone to the store? Yes.
Should I be legally barred from using the phrase âfusion cookingâ? Also yes.
Will I attempt Pocket Risotto next week? Absolutely. I have a cough drop and three googly eyes ready.
Never underestimate the power of bad ideas with good intentions.
And chapstick.
