I’m always so confused over the persistent use of the term plot holes when really people mean plot contrivances. The immediate explanation of the term plot hole is when a plot point doesn’t hold much water whether it’s in the narrative or in regards to its relatability factor.
What I’m really getting at here is that the term being an idiom itself kind of dulls a critical think-piece to me when the basis of it relies heavily on that very term...if that makes sense.
okayyyy you wanna play that game, how about situation 29 with sentence 15 for rebelcaptain? GOOD LUCK
... FINE. 29: breakup, 15: “If you think I don’t feel anything for you, then you’re more stupid than I thought.”
there’s no happy ending so ymmv. next stop, angstville. ugh. i did this to myself gdi. rated T for like, the vague idea that they were in a physical relationship but no actual sex, and also jyn having a panic attack,. also this is not canon lol they never ever would break up omg lol this is the opposite of them for SO MANY REASONS so and also I didn’t even FINISH IT LOL I LITERALLY COULDN’T i disown this monstrosity, i reject and denounce it. under the cut is where it gets extra stupid lol
“I think it was probably inevitable,” Cassian says as he pulls the bottle to his lips.

The way they fall into it so fast, so hard, blinders on. Bacta still on their tongues, the adrenaline pumping from Scarif and then Yavin. The attachment, the separation anxiety, the tension behind every moment, every sigh, every kiss. The wildness in her eyes.
The way he's certain he looks at her, like she is a temporary joy, fleeting like smoke. Like she’d go and leave only ashes behind to remind him of her, because she can’t really want to stay, like he doesn’t leave with every close call, every near-miss.
And with her recklessness, he’s gotten himself into more and more of those close calls, chasing her - always chasing her, always following her into the fire, into her mad whims.
He’s scared her off.
With every bacta patch: heated silence frozen over, another duracrete brick added to the wall they built together, their partnership as effective as ever.

“I never even saw you two arguing.”
“We didn’t ever fight.” He wipes condensation off of his bottle. “That was the problem.”
“How could that possibly be a bad thing?”
Cassian peels at the damp label and doesn’t answer.

The flimsy smiles, the cracks in the foundation. Hot nights, cold mornings. The physical the only intimacy, no matter how much he’d wanted to ignite that old need of hers, that fire. Let her burn his mind, not just his body.
And the quiet moments buzzed with the words he was too much a coward to say - I will never leave you, I want only what you’ll give me, please don’t be scared, I have nothing else but myself to give you.
The U-wing cockpit, the crystal against his skin, the mission, the ‘troopers surrounding her, the cuffs on her wrists, the lullaby he hadn’t given her, the protocol he had ignored, the risk he’d taken, the knowledge in her head, her green eyes in his sights for just a second, not even a second. Just a flash.
The troopers fall. He slices her cuffs, the rifle hanging from his back.
The hurt writ on her face under the lines of hyperspace.
“You would have done it,” Jyn said, quiet and barely restrained. “I saw you.”
Never, he wants to say. And he very nearly believes it - he would die, line up the shot and step into it rather than watch her die by his hand. But he’s not in the business of nevers and evers. He can’t lie to her, not again. Not after Eadu. He has to be sure of his answer.
His silence, no matter how short, is a confession to her ears. Her face crumbles, like she’s kneeling before Saw Gerrera again, about to make Jedha her grave. “Cassian! What the fuck?”
They’ve shared a bed for weeks. “I wouldn’t have,” he says, and he is certain it is true, he’d just been looking, watching to cover her back while she -
- but the cause, the cause, the cause -
- her eyes, her smile, her fire.
She is panicking. Breathing too fast, shaking her head, hands trembling.
“Jyn. Please, let’s just go to bed.” He reaches out for her-
She shifts away. “Don’t touch me!” Green-gray eyes dagger-like, her words the sharpest weapons, and oh, he’s been on the receiving end of her sparks before on Eadu, but this is a wildfire fueled by the rawest kind fear - self-preservation. “I shouldn’t have trusted you!”
“Calm down!” He knows how to de-escalate. How to settle an informant down.
But she isn’t an informant. He’s had her in his bed. The worst thing is that her anger makes her seem more alive than she has since she smiled at him on the Scarif tower, as beautiful as anyone he’d ever known. Alight with her joy.
He has no idea how to handle this.
“It must be exhausting to put up with me,” she snarls. “Is that part of the job? Fucking the assets? But you get to put us down before we get too attached.”
Cassian sees red. “If you think I don’t feel anything for you, then you’re more stupid than I thought.”
“I must be!”
“You have no idea!”
(more fighting but like ??? idk)

“She’ll come back,” Leia whispers. The dark circles under her eyes match his. “She has to.”

Keep seeing posts about "plot holes" and I'd just like to explain what plot holes actually are, because it feels like 90% of the internet has no clue.
Plot holes are things that go against a pre-established rule of the world it lives in, or an error in continuity. In essence, it's something that is physically impossible for the world the work is set in.
For example, if it's established that it's Character A cannot swim, Character A should keep this trait until they learn how to. If Character A is suddenly able to swim, and there's no reason as to why they can, that is a plot hole.
If you want a bigger plot hole example, let's say that Character A is separated from Character B and Character C, and cannot reasonably join them in a small time frame. If they suddenly appear with Character B and Character C, with no explanation, that is a plot hole.
What people keep calling "plot holes" are more-often plot contrivances. Things that happen or don't happen within a plot for the sake of convenience.
For example, if characters act out-of-character so that a certain plot point can happen, that is a plot contrivance. Makes no sense for the characters to act that way, but it's also not impossible.
Or, if Character A pushes their attacker away, and the attacker just so happens to fall on a knife that was not previously established to be there, yet wasn't established to not be there, that is a plot contrivance.
I think I should also mention that characters doing something you wouldn't personally do is not a plot hole nor a plot contrivance. No, it's not a plot hole that Character A just let the villain monologue instead of shooting them.
