young Peter and Jerry
‘...Jerry (Lewis) was excited about the board, he played it down to others but alone he waxed lyrical about it. The thing about Jerry is this, when he’s into something or his mind is on, he’s really into it and very switched on, and when he’s like that he’s both serious faced and excited - that’s not a very common combination I know, but Jerry has layers... I didn’t have the gall to tell him the picture of Dean and him seemed to cover some of the writing it irked me as soon as I saw it. He usually picked up on the finer details of things even more than I did and I was sure he would’ve spotted it, whether he did or not I don’t know, but I wasn’t about to bring it up and spoil his day. But just as I moved towards the board a passerby joked ‘kids, did you stick that pic on over someone else’s act?’, Jerry glanced at me forlorn, I smiled at him then he smiled back. We stood aside that board for what felt like an eternity hoping to get a good picture. It took a little longer to take a photograph back then, and neither of us ever particularly liked how we looked in a print anyway, though we were both just crazy about photography and keep sakes... I think we were both quite self conscious then, and for a good few years after too...In the end I don’t think we succeeded, but in my mind that made it all the more special and certainly more funny...when he saw it he called us a bunch of unsure dopes...I told him we looked like two impersonators, impostors...people heard us laughing about it like two giggling school kids a few rows back I’m sure!’
