Kotobank says that it’s Edo period red light district talk and was originally polite. Iyami’s use is based off Tony Tani’s use of it, and he said he had gotten it from a Takarazuka Revue actress, so I would say it has more of a showbiz vibe to it now and likely isn’t considered very polite in the sense that it’s used sarcastically

the thing is that it’s not used by many people partially because it’s specifically an Iyami thing. I’ve seen it described on the internet as “something a rich aunt would use”

Jealous of izakaya: over here, small “Japanese” bars are pretty much always obvious brothels :(

I have not been in an izakaya yet! but they are extraordinarily popular in Vancouver. not as much as sushi restaurants, but there are a lot of them, with local chains and all

Chowder is my must-eat in Seattle. The seafood there is soooo good. I want to go back there some day.

Seattle has no culinary specialties that aren’t shared with or taken from Vancouver besides their coffee, so since I’m a Vancouver Person I end up treating Seattle with a kind of dismissal... I’m sorry Seattle-lovers everywhere
