Two Week Taster - Time Based
Plastic Cups - Evaluation
Like the first task, I feel that it is successful with expressing the time-based aspect well, due to a very clear and interesting sequence. However I definitely feel that this task is undoubtedly beneath in both style and substance compared to the “language task”
First of all, What did I like about the final piece? I think that I’m definitely getting used to the basics of structuring a sequence with a linear progression, and this piece is a very good example of that. It’s very clear, the sequence, starting with the cup with bright, distinct colours. It then becomes torn and reforms with a harder shell, subduing the colours slightly. Again, it illustrates the sequence well. But the biggest success, in my opinion, is the photo-shopped hands, mixed with black and white acrylic paint. I’ve learnt from the past and the photo-shop is definitely an improvement compared to the last task.
As much as I said that it was successful with the fact that it presented a time-based sequence, I feel that it was very lacking in how it presented it. Basically I feel that the theme is far too obviously expressed, there’s definitely a lack of of subtlety and creativity when it comes to imagery. The cup with colours kinda lost its effectiveness when I changed the images to black and white, however I feel that the final image looked better black and white than colour, so it is obvious that the cups were not made well. The final image in the sequence is really bad compared to the rest of the images, because it actually really hard to tell that the coloured cup has been ripped in half, so the purpose is quite lost there. I would definitely change a lot of the areas that I found was lacking as a result, because, at worst, the piece is actually quite hard to understand closer to the end of the sequence. Sure, viewers will know by the end that the metaphorical person(cup) has gone through change and is a new person(thing), however they wouldn’t know how. For how long we’d had to do this tsk I felt that the end result was quite good, however, if I was given another day or two, i can assure that there will be less obvious errors.
