I recent repaired and restored these beautiful plaster relief doors for a client. They couldn’t tell me who the original artist was, so I can’t give credit, but these suckers were cracked, chipped, broken and all kinds of damaged. So I had them brought to my studio. First I sanded around the damaged areas, to remove any wax of finishing so that the patch would stick, then I built a wire armature which was screwed into the wood so the patch would have something to stick to. I then filled in any tiny cracks with gorilla glue. Once the glue was totally dry, I mixed up a batch of plaster of Paris and worked it into the holes and smoothed it all out. After the plaster was completely dry I sanded down any rough bits and did my best to blend the new plaster with the old plaster. I then made a coffee colored stain using high quality watercolor paint in order to match the tone of the original aged plaster. After everything was completely dry again, I rubbed the entire thing with renaissance wax to protect it and help all the old bits blend in with the new bits. I think it came out pretty darn great! I’m kind of digging this whole #artrestoration thing. I love problem solving this stuff. #sculpturerelief #reliefsculpture #sculpturerestoration #plasterrestoration #plastersculpture #southbay #california #sanpedro #palosverdes #longbeach (at Embrace The Weird) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5tQmKlB-k7/?igshid=u4fpza7z8vx1
