How to be a better eggplant ally
Things flavor-normative/vegetably normative people need to stop assuming about eggplant people:
1. That all eggplant people are obsessed with coatings, such as sunscreen, chocolate-covered pretzels, the earth’s outer crust, etc. etc.; this is perpetuated by media stereotypes, plantphobic jokes, and advertisers heavy-handedly trying to pander to the eggplant demographic by referencing layers and coatings.
2. That you can recognize an eggplant person based on manner of speech/odor/posture/footwear etc. Some eggplant people do not match the stereotypes--- this does not make them “less eggplant.”
3. That eggplant people exist to convey “moral lessons” to vegetably normative folks, or have no purpose but to dole out spiritual wisdom and insight for vegetably normatives. Eggplant people don’t exist for anyone but themselves, despite harmful media tropes to the contrary.
4. That it’s ‘ok’ or ‘funny’ to reference an eggplant person’s toes, ask about whether they hurt, sniff the person’s shoes, etc.. Would you sniff a vegetably normative person’s shoes? Observe the same boundaries and basic politeness with eggplant people.
5. That just because you have an eggplant friend, the jokes you make are automatically okay and “not plantphobic.” Eggplant people may joke about nonstick pan coatings, sleepwalking, etc. within their own community, but even if you have eggplant friends or family, if you are vegetably normative you are NOT part of that community. It is important as an eggplant ally to avoid plantphobic jokes and comments.
6. Finally, don’t assume that the biggest eggplant rights issues are the ones the media plays up. Yes, plantphobia in the fashion industry is a real issue. But meanwhile, protections against plantphobic violence are sparse, classrooms are universally geared toward the vegetably normative, and access to eggplant-specific sleeping medications is almost nonexistant.
