❄️What is a Stellar Dendrite?❄️
Snow science is something that is new to me. As someone who has lived in hot climates most of my life, I cant say I've spent enough time around snow to perform scientific studies on it.
This week however, I actually got to explore snow and learned quite a lot! We spent the day on top of Brundage Mountain digging snow pits to determine the structure, strength, and history of this year's snowpack (something I'll detail later) but we also were able to examine snow through a scope. It was there I really examined stellar dendrites for the first time!
Stellar Dendrites are what we typically picture when we think of snowflakes. They are hexagonal growths of ice crystals on tiny bits of dust, pollen, and other airborne material. These materials have water vapor deposited on them as the air cools and they grow into the fascinating structures we call snowflakes. What's even cooler is that the humidity and temperature can affect and change the formation shape of these snowflakes.

Meaningful Learning Experiences: Science
Planning learning experiences within a meaningful context
teaching children correct terminology empowers them. Teach them new words in a meaningful context and the language will become more relevant to them
don’t get students to make things for no reason. Use the things they make for a purpose. A meaningful technological activity: design and make a device for safely catching animals (slater), and a suitable container to house the animal until observation is over. “the part I liked best was making the bug house and actually using it”- student.
have a class discussion about things before starting to design it - what factors need to be considered? e.g. we need to feed the slaters, it needs to be safe, can we use recycled materials in our design?
Place based learning - using the school yard for learning experiences and encourage students to see how their school ground fits into the wider environment. You can do this by registering with biodiversity snapshots which allows students to participate in authentic data collection (being little scientists).

learning outcomes are more likely to be achieved when the teacher takes into account the students’ existing knowledge, skills, values, interests, and cultural backgrounds. these factors should be considered when planning scientific and technological activities and providing reference materials. By selecting activities and materials from other cultures, the science and technology curricula are made more inclusive.

Week 3 – Creative pedagogy
Creative Pedagogy is a broad term, referring to the teaching methods of arts and creativity. When teaching creativity, a teacher must realise that traditional teaching and learning methods are now gone, and the student often becomes a creator in the arts being taught (Mazzola et al, 2011). Whilst I was walking through the Long Pocket Campus, I realised that there are plenty of opportunities as a teacher to harvest and foster the creativity of children, and help them develop. An important part of this is ‘Place based learning’. Place based learning is the idea of teaching children in an open space, outside. It helps children better understand the environment they are living in, and have a greater impact on the ecological outcomes of the area (Gruenewald, 2003) As an educator, it is important to be creative whilst teaching creativity, by not rigidly adhering to the curriculum. By placing an emphasis on the hidden curriculum evident in the arts, a teacher can successfully utilise methods such as place based learning. I believe this weeks excursion will help me better understand creative pedagogy and the effect it may have on students learning and academic career.

We're in the production phase of our largest elements. These are 9 foot tall styrofoam dishes that have been milled on a CNC router (computer controlled cutting machine). The dishes will shipped to the East bay and sprayed with a 3" coating of glass reinforced cement.
