ON BEING THE BEST THERE EVER WAS: TIES BETWEEN THE PHILIPPINES AND POKÉMON
The Pokémon franchise has been in the Philippines for about 17 years as of 2015 and its effect or influence on Filipino recipients is brought about by multiple interrelated factors.
Generally speaking, Pokémon was well-loved and had a good reception when the first season was aired in the country by a local TV station around late 1999. At that time, the idea of Pokémon that encompasses creatures of varying species (then 151, now 721) that have special powers, abilities, forms of vast kind, and can evolve, battle, and befriend humans (commonly termed as trainers) is considered novel and entails adventure set in a different world with similarities as of the real earth. Fans since then ranged from young children (most were born in the 90’s) to teenaged individuals and even including but to a lesser extent, adults.
Popularity rose even more with the advent of the video games which started in the Game Boy console with the Red, Green, and Blue versions followed by a remake with the Yellow version (first generation). Much loved features of the games include battling and trading on top of following the main storyline. Trading Card Game together with its collection is also widespread at this time.
With the succeeding generations in the game line and in the anime series, Pokémon fame in the Philippines continued to rise until an apparent decline in the mid 2000’s during the time when the games which used to be played mainly in the Game Boy shifted to the Nintendo DS and the anime runs in the local television were poorly updated and were just replayed. Newer generations are released in a pattern-like manner every 2-3 years and the inability to adapt of a number of fans lead to unfamiliarity with the Pokémon species from later generations. With this, it can be deduced that possession of the handheld game devices Game Boy and Nintendo DS together with the copies of the games (which is the more common avenue for avid fans) and up-to-date viewing of the anime series are big factors for the continued Pokémon knowledge of fans. This can be affected by factors such as socioeconomic or just the mere loss or unsustained interest of fans.
From Generation I to VI, many changes have already been made and seen in the games which includes the graphics, gameplay, storyline, activities to be done, and many more. Anime series also seem to be made for younger children viewing with untoward effects for fans who have grown up and got tired of the slow progressing and repetitive storyline.
At present, Pokémon in the Philippines continues to strive and with PKMN-ph having thousands of members with common interests and goals, the future of Philippine Pokémon is bright! As a vibrant community where Filipino trainers gather, PKMN-ph is one of its greatest legacy in the country in terms of impact and influence and through this, the Philippines is geared to become the best there ever was in terms of Pokémon competence.
